Like Spency said, Beast isn't a character. He's more of a caricature meant to build tension within the plot, which is often way easier than writing a villain with goals and motivations. He's also the sort of villain that allows for easy character development, since his sole existence is dependent on hindering those who enter his domain. Wirt and his brother don't have to challenge someone with a worldview, but instead someone who has a simple purpose that they have to overcome to prevail. Most adult movies try to be grounded and can't create a human villain like that without them becoming a flat and 2 dimenional.

It works as well as it does mostly because he personifies a concept which we all face at some point in life and is tied to the story's central themes. Hopelessness, tiredness, giving in and letting yourself be swallowed up. He never really comes into physical conflict with the characters despite threatening to on several occasions. He relies on wearing down their resolve with tedium and manipulation of their circumstances. He only wins when you surrender yourself.

The Beast is a 10/10, for the type of story he exists in. He's not just a scary boogeyman, he's the representation of depression, the thoughts in your head telling you to just give up and fall asleep in the snow, and the pain will pass - and for the woodsman, the beast is the lies you tell yourself, the part of you that doesn't want to move on from the past and confront your fears and "go back to that empty house".
@northidaho
Жыл бұрын
5:35 Actually the worst part of it, is that she wasn't dead all along. In the intro you can see her going into the woods and getting lost. We assume that she got lost and The Woodsman went looking for her, ran into The Beast and he lied to him saying that his daughter was in the lantern. This is a side note, but I have heard someone else say that The Beast intentionally chose to manipulate the woodsman, because if at any point (even before he became lantern bearer) he would've just gone into the tavern, they would've told him the motives of the beast. I think the Woodsman was isolated, and far off from other people, hence making him a good option to manipulate. Also imagine how much darker the story would've been if The Woodsmans daughter somehow died and got turned into a tree, and the woodsman literally unknowingly grinded up his daughter to keep the lantern lit.

I don't think it's ever been confirmed, but the Beast is almost identical to The Erl King, from the poem of the same name, by Goethe (and it has been set to music several times, so there's the operatic connection)

@@jayfilms99 I've also read other versions where the Erl King is a woodsman who lures maidens by being friendly, but then usually enslaves them and/or turns them into caged birds, or worse. Which could be the origin of the Bluebeard fairy tale. And I'd say theres also elements of the Phooka and Nuckelavee from Celtic mythology in there as well.

Another aspect I love about the beast is, despite not being a deep character or doesn’t inflict pain in the physical sense, he still got a high kill count. Every Edelwood tree is a lost soul that he’s lured to their fate or claimed after making them hope. He tells the woodsmen he’s been cutting up lost souls for years, and the beast has been around way beyond that. I get that the beast is sort of a mix of the biblical devil and death but as a “character” I kinda find the fact that despite never laying a hand on anyone, he still has many deaths on his hands, all to fuel himself and continue sending those to their doom.
@Seba12322
Жыл бұрын
He’s also very much a coward, all *bark* and no bite (pun very much intended) I like that, as the devil is usually seen temping people rather than forcing or hold them hostage. He’s an emotional and mental threat than a physical one. I like villains that pose a physical threat but the Beast does the manipulation route so well, he gets you to hurt yourself or to cause harm to others.

I actually read somewhere that Over the Garden Wall was based on Dante Alighari's Divine Comedy. The forest is part of the Inferno, and The Beast is Satan. Considering that the MC is wondering though a forest when he's dead adds evidence to this. And those who commit suicide end as trees in the afterlife.

There have been comparisons to the Lich, and I see him and the Beast as representing different types of death. The Lich is extinction; a being who's goal is to kill everything, who's arrival killed the dinosaurs and who was manifested from a nuclear bomb. He is an existential threat. But the Beast is a more personal type of death: suicide. A despair that tries to convince you to give in and accept it, let it feed and consume you. The Lich is grandiose, the Beast petty. One grand and one personal

I feel like people wind up looking too deep and miss the point of this show. The Beast is the very concept of death itself, he has no real agency past the whispers he can plant in the ears of mortals. The woodsman is an aging man who has lost his daughter to death (The Beast), and is trying to teach Wirt and Greg to fear death. I don't even consider Wirt and Greg to be separate characters. In my view, the whole show is a metaphor for the human condition. Think of Wirt and Greg as two manifestations of a struggling person's mind. Wirt is the transitioning teenager, cynical and depressed about the world, and Greg is the innocence and positivity. Look at their interactions with the world around them and you'll see it's all a commentary on trying to find your way in the world when you're "lost"

I don't like him because he's one of those characters that's STATED to be a lot worse than he is. We KNOW he STANDS for worse than we see ONLY because the story claims it. Yeah he's dark, yeah he's clearly working a grift, and yeah he attempts the unforgivable with Greg-- but Greg has to BEND OVER BACKWARDS to fall for his shit, it ALMOST feels like he goes along with it almost out of PITY. for the most part he just stands in the shadows and talks, and he doesn't even SAY anything all that scary or threatening besides VERY OBVIOUSLY attempting to mess with people, who KEEP having to ACT dumb enough to fall for it.
@victoriacastillo3978
Жыл бұрын
Yeah, but I think that's kinda the point. It actually happends with each character in every episode actually, they had problems that could have been resolved with basic logic before Wirt and Greg came to their way. It also kinda plays with the fary tale logic that The Unknown has, talking birds and frogs, living skeletons, a school for animals, witches, and etc. That's why the final confrotation it's perfect for the story, because it's our main protagonist, Wirt, who through all the series has been trying to use logic and reason, even if that didn't work out well at the begining, it actually does in the end because he realised how dumb it's trusting the Beast's promises
@devinpaul9026
Жыл бұрын
@@victoriacastillo3978 That's kind of a point where Wirt comes in, but I still don't buy that so many others simply "didn't logic". The Beast is clearly known enough to be a scary story people tell. @@devinpaul9026the point is, the devil only has the power over you that you give him. All he can do is whisper lies in your ears and turn your fears doubts and grief against you. He appears at your weakest and tempts you into handing him power over you. Breaking free is as simple as confronting and rejecting the devil, but he keeps whispering lies to keep your judgment clouded. The devil is little more than a parasite, but an effective one. This is in line with OTGW's Dantes Inferno influence, and gothic literature sensibilities which generally reject the notion of a powerful fundamental evil.

I think it's both actually, the lantern it's what keeps the beast alive but the beast it's smart enough to convince people to keep and take care of it.
