Hiram "Rusty" Williams was from Nelson County, KY (later on lived in Nashville, IL) who was part of a brother duo, Rusty and Dusty. While they were not very successful and John "Dusty" Williams died in 1948, Rusty left a legacy with his great neice who passed some of his music on to me.
Rusty played a two finger thumb lead style common to much of Kentucky at the time. This is a tune he learned from his uncle John Hamilton who was responsible for his love of music. Uncle John played this tune a lot at dances and told his family that it was composed by Stephen Foster (which is wasn't) because of the proximity of the plantation in Nelson County where Foster wrote "My Old Kentucky Home." Uncle John had a tendency to exaggerate a lot.
Hiram played in Double C/D tuning which was a problem since neither he nor his brother could sing in those keys. This was on of many reasons why the duo was never a success.
