in my many jailings I've think the most disturbing aspect of US incarceration, (once you're past the charade of "justice" and have landed firmly in a jail) is the realization that the entire institution is designed with SADISM and PUNISHMENT as the prime directives, billions of dollars spent to torment the poor with no attempt to re-habilitate or assist in any way, most guards take their mandate to make inmates suffer very seriously and this warps the morals and humanity of all involved

In 1998 I did music reviews for my college newspaper. It was soon after Ani started her own label "Righteous Babe Records," which was pretty historic at the time. I used to send letters and emails to indie labels asking for promo copies to review. Her label sent me by far the coolest press packet of the dozens I received, and a copy of her new album at that time "Little Plastic Castle." It's a great CD, and I still have it today.

I love Ani as I have a number of her albums, but I disagree with her on one issue. I believe it's very important to vote your heart and be true to yourself, because if you're not true to yourself then politicians know that you can be more easily manipulated into supporting them. If they know your vote is more about beating the "evil" opponent, then you're going to accept more "evil" than you would if you had voted your heart/conscience. And the lesser of 2 evils mentality is what has brought us where we are today.
@reganjo1955
4 жыл бұрын
Two Sheds Johnson I recall her saying in this interview it was more important that people vote their true belief than not vote. On the other hand voting strategically is still a valid and I’d argue a moral valid choice. I’m voting Bernie in the primaries, believe that Nader was right about the Dems being the left wing of the business party and still wish Scalia had staid out of the Florida recount saga to avoid the new American century we were handed by Bush and Cheney. It’s probably true Gore would have succumbed to 9/11 panic but in this case the lesser of two evils’ might saved a few hundred thousand lives and gotten us a few years more time to avoid eco-catastrophe from AGCC. Ani is also saying that the progressive movement is the way for Dems to win and this I FEAR this may take many painful elections to realize our ultimate victory. I’d never vote 3rd party in a swing state if it meant the possibility of more GOP destruction of marginalized communities and letting all the hard work of progressives be rolled back regulation by regulation and perhaps more topically as we now see in the assassination of Suleimani more egregious aggression being executed by determined right wing hegemonists wherever they see the opportunity to make the world Americas shopping mall.
@twoshedsjohnson8540

@@reganjo1955 So, a lot there to digest, and honestly I'm not really here to have a lengthy debate on this matter. I do appreciate your views though. I'm not saying to be a total purist/idealist when it comes to voting, but there is no doubt in my mind that this back and forth of voting AGAINST someone rather than voting FOR someone has created a very powerful establishment in DC that always seems to perpetuate this "this is the most important election of our lifetimes" mentality that ensures that most everyone simply votes party lines. That has to change and if that means losing an election or two to send the message that enough is enough, then so be it. It's truly disheartening that we only have 2 parties...2 voices...to choose from in this country. I don't see things changing until enough people take a stand and throw their vote to those they feel much more closely represent their values, and step out of this destructive pattern of simply "accepting the lesser of 2 evils".

Two Sheds Johnson - I would never want to contribute to a lengthy debate :) First I empathize with your views and disheartened feeling about the the two party death lock. Second we agree on the priority of voting POSITIVELY. Where we part is in the tactic of ‘losing a few elections. 1) more Brett Kavanaughs 2) more neo-con hot wars in the Middle East. 3) 4/8 more bellicose years belching CO2 into our decreasing margin of error for human survival. 4) US History QED. First let’s get Bernie nominated and then let’s talk again about arguably handing the mikes (Pompeo&Pence) and the Trumpster four more years of navigating the ship of state into the vortex... Note: Bernie did not run as a third party candidate in 2016. Stein was not a natural successor then nor would anyone BUT Bernie, in my view, warrant my third party vote.

Campaign contributions are only part of the story. Equally if not more important is the network of billionaire-financed think tanks, lobbying groups and so on that shapes public discourse. And then there’s the revolving door: It’s depressingly normal for former officials from both parties to take jobs with big banks, corporations and consulting firms, and the prospect of such employment can’t help but influence policy while they’re still in office." www.nytimes.com/2019/12/26/opinion/warren-campaign-donors.html

@dramtoet1809
4 жыл бұрын
@@remlatzargonix1329 I live in the Netherlands. I agree it can take a long time sometimes but i do not see that as a big problem. The old cabinet stays in power and government still works although major policy changes have to wait. When there are major problems or a crisis things tent to move much faster. The point of radical parties is a plus for me. It is easy to get on the ballot and new parties can go from 0 to being one of the biggest parties, which has happened multiple times. I like to know if a big part of the country has extreme positions, give them a voice and fight it out in parliament. In this way their ideas can be challenged, ignoring them will only make the problem worse. We had this with the rise of Pim Fortuyn. He made a big point about immigration and many people felt the same way because he became the biggest party from nothing (he was shot dead before he could be prime minister). Almost 20 years later most major parties adopted much of his platform, making immigration harder and asking more from immigrants e.g. learning the language. He was demonized as a racist and killed because of that but in the end he was mostly right. It caused a major shift in Dutch politics. The biggest problem for me is that you always need a coalition. This means everything gets watered down and it can be really hard to make big structural changes. It also means that even if your party gets in power you might not get what you voted for because they get in a government with a party which blocks the thing you want to change. It is not perfect but it is the best system i think. Voter turnout is high, usually around 80%, and all votes count which is the most fair.

Dang! I tuned in to see what little weird clues would be on Matt’s T-shirt today And instead he’s all GQ. That story about Mongolia made it all worth it though. He’s a fine example of why parents shouldn’t freak out too bad when their kids go off the rails

I honestly don't understand how you're a political entertainer/musician/advocate BUT you don't really know much about the presidential candidates, you get your candidate info from 3rd parties (depending on who is telling you, can be one of the worst ways to get informed), and you still can't see that almost every one running is a charlatan, and Bernie is the activist disguised as a politician. Katie and Matt have to school Ani so she can spread the Bernie love to others
