Well done. Thank you so much. I'm a mechanical Engineer, graduated in 1988 and am now picking up this program on my own time. I was going to go back to school and take a class or two but with quality videos like this and others like it, there is no need to hit the classroom.

For all those who are having problem of "over defining", make sure you guys are not making the point (at origin) coincident with the edge. I was having the same problem until I realized that I was trying to make the wrong point coincident with the edge. That is why SolidWorks was giving me the problem of "over defining" because that point is already coincident with the origin. Try making the other end coincident with the edge. It will definitely work. Well, it worked for me ;)

Spirals are a little more difficult. You may have noticed that I didn't use the helix feature to make this spring. You may be able to link the diameter dimension of the spiral to another dimension that is connected to a moving object. If I find time in the next few days I might try it and let you know.

Thanks a lot! This still works in 2016 version! But I had trouble figuring out how to make the relationship between the point in the sketch of the spring and the edge of the mounting. It was just to press enter and select both, then the option to make them coincident appeared. Thanks!

Animating the disc spring is a very similar process. I would model it up as a multi-body part instead of an assembly. Make a single sketch with all the relationships necessary to make it work under compression. Then use a single revolve feature. In the assembly create the in-context references between the sketch and the moving components.

This is just an animation. However SolidWorks does offer Nonlinear FEA in order to calculate spring stiffness during the animation. Nonlinear and Dynamic studies are included in SolidWorks Simulation Premium.

this is great...however when you take the assembly in which you've created the coincidence relationship between the spring length point and the spring mount surface, and put that assembly in another assembly, the relationship seems to be broken and the spring stops changing length. how can one fix that

I have built a subassembly with 2 springs in this way and then, when I introduce the subassembly into the main assembly as flexible and I move and reload, the spring doesnt update his length. My question is: Does it just work in the main assembly or there is any way to make springs in flexible subassemblies?

I got all the way to the assembly. I mated my spring and the bottom plate cocentric and also coincident but when i try to mate the end point of my spring to the top plate I cant. When I click the point then I cant click the top plate because its transparent. Or if I click the edge line i cant make it coincident :(

hey i have done all the steps as u hav mentioned in the video. but somehow after i add the coincident relation to the free end of the centre line and the face of my spring mount. after doing so i cannot move the spring mount at al. is it coz the component properties has the spring as rigid in the solve as dialog box? i cant change that either coz the option for flexible isnt active. please help me out.

Hi, Im using solidworks 2016, and i cant seem to be able to select both the circle and the path. The orientation option " Twist along Path" is missing. I have to use the helix method to create my spring, which resulted in me not able to mate the spring to the surface during assembly, hence no compression, please help!!
@jbyrne001
7 жыл бұрын
Hello! Hmmm... If you are able to make a spring using a helix then I'm assuming you know what you're doing. Some users put the profile and path in the same sketch for example. Or maybe they're putting the profile and path in the wrong selection box. But I don't see you doing that based on your message. I can't picture what else it might be.

Jim Byrne Hello!! Thanks for replying. I've had experience with solidworks 2014 edition. I could follow your video back then. thumbs up for clear and easy tutorials!! However, I have change to the 2016 edition now, but i could not select both the path and profile. These are what I've tried, firstly i created a line, saved that as sketch 1, than at the same plane, I've created a circle( sketch 2). Then when i choose the feature and select my circle as profile, the program did not allow me to select the line as my path, it prompted "please select a closed path".
@jbyrne001

I think you got me on this one. I tried getting that message to pop up by changing some settings. I even tried adding an extra line to the path sketch to create a problem. That was the only thing I could think of is there is an extra entity in the path sketch on accident.

Probably a bit late now. But they've changed the wording slightly. Profile orientation: Follow path Profile twist: Specify twist value Twist control: Revolutions This leads to the same results.

Hi Jim! Could you help me with the assembly the spring, please. I fix the base of spring to the spring and after making the point coincident with the plane of the top spring mount I find a problem that is my spring doesn´t move when I move the top spring mount. I appreciate if you can help me. Thank you ;)
@jbyrne001
9 жыл бұрын
Hi Pedro! Is it possible that you are creating an assembly mate for the coincident relationship? Make sure that it's not a "mate" you are adding. It's important that you are editing the sketch path for the sweep in the assembly. You must be in edit part mode on the spring. Does this help? Feel free to send a screen shot to jimbyrne777@gmail.com if needed.

Hi Mike! Thank you for your kind words. That is the shortcut toolbar. The default key on your keyboard is "S" to bring it up right next to your cursor. You can change it to any key that you wish in the customize dialog if you are using "S" for another command.

@jbyrne001

Hello, the spring will only update after a rebuild. During the animation it rebuilds for every time frame which makes it look like it's doing it constantly. I'm using a hot key for rebuild by the way. Instead of the traffic light.

Hello Jim! wow! Cool you answered me! You know i could not replicate your tutorial..i did everything like you showed but when i want to move the spring mounts it says its overdefined and that the components cant be updated...now ....when i drag the point of the end of the centerline,it moves...what did i do wrong? How di you mate the spring mounts? i just made 4 sides coincident,maybe thats wrong? Hi from Brazil and thanks !! ( i can send you the file if you want (2014)
@jbyrne001
10 жыл бұрын
Hello again Mike! You only need two mates in the assembly. One of the parts should be fixed. The other one will have two coincident mates to the fixed part. It should move up and down. The spring is only mated to the fixed part. No mates to the moving part. When you edit the path in the spring you are creating an in-context sketch relationship to the moving part. In other words make sure that you are editing the spring in the assembly (not creating an assembly mate). I'm lost in my own words, so I hope this is making sense. It's not easy to type this when it's much easier to look at it on the screen. Unfortunately I don't have a seat of SolidWorks to open your assembly.

how about an extension spring, could you show me? I do really need your help. Thank You
@jbyrne001

Hello alfaageng. If the spring extends instead of compression, my first thought is the part the spring attaches to simply moves in the other direction. And remember, if you don't want the attached part in the video animation, it can be hidden. Just a thought as I don't have a clear picture of your application.
