I would recommend MIFA/Annecy. This is the event where you can do sales, pitch, and also recruit talents/build partnership. Unlike MIP ('market'), the 'festive' atmosphere and the beautiful location allow people to talk in a more casual/friendly manner. In other words, you can do business talk there but also build a wonderful friendship with people (in the same industry) whom you'll be constantly meeting in the future.

I totally agree! That's one of my favorite festivals and conventions in the world! To be honest, the only reason I didn't mention is because many of my watchers are Americans and MIFA is not typically a place where newcomers can succeed especially if they're coming from the US. What do you think?

It's a wonderful event if you can make it! Regardless of your level you'll be inspired and you'll probably have lots of face-time with excellent talent and some influential players in the European marketplace. I just wouldn't set your expectations that you'll leave there with a deal. But it will be a great kickstart to your career.

Both great conventions! But my particular focus for this video are the places where you can progress the business of animation development (i.e. pitching, selling, buying). I think these are more focused on job recruiting specifically of talent on the art production side.

As a french young writer, Annecy is clearly an obvious and ideal choice for me, but I still struggle to really "get" the mood that I should be in for such meeting, every one being here for so many different reasons and intent. Especially, when making your debute in writing, it may be hard to get through the already massively filled schedule of prods or buyers and to find a quiet moment to talk real deal. I would definitly appreciate some advice about how to approach and address this issue. Any thought ?

Bonjour and thank you for watching! Well, I do sympathize with you, because to be honest, being a first time writer is not the strongest position to be in when you're going to a professional market. I would say that since you don't have any credits, it's not the right time to try and chat-up buyers.They often don't have time to groom new talent. But, if you can find agents, indy filmmakers whose work you love, or even other writers willing to offer up some advice, that might be helpful. Also, look for partners who you can help - like a director who is looking to develop an idea and needs a writer to help. If you do that work for a deferred payment to prove yourself, then you could really help each other. Does that make sense?

Kidscreen for focusing on younger audiences right? Ottawa perfectly balanced of animation and business and good for beginners got it So it is either toy, anime or comic convention to test out your work and see what ppl like and not be interested into ok then.

Based on the conventions that you mentioned, in your opinion is a content creator better off setting up as a booth vendor for pitch purposes or going in walking around with a backpack filled with tangibles, animation bible, digital portfolio (iPad/smartphone) with your pitch/prototypes on it and why so?
@SurvivingAnimation
5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question! If you're going to a consumer-facing event (like a comic convention), then only set-up a booth if you're actually selling product. If you're going to a business event (like Kidscreen), then bring around your materials, but make sure to book as many meetings in advance as possible, otherwise you might find yourself wandering around and not getting time with anyone. Does that help?

Hey there! I just recently discovered your channel, and your content has been incredibly informative for understanding the business end of the industry. I am somewhat curious however, I've noticed that a lot of the content on this channel are for those who are newish to the industry, but already have at least a partial foot in the door. I'm wondering if you have any direction or advice for someone who would want to enter the industry (I'd personally attribute myself as a writer), but currently stands at ground zero, has maybe a handful of low-level connections (I'm talking very recent musicians and voice actors), but otherwise has no ties to the industry. What would you recommend doing to get about gaining credibility and pedigree, and basically becoming hirable?

Hey there and thanks for watching! Your question really depends on what you want to ultimately achieve. I'm guessing from your screen name you want to be a writer? Do you want to write TV, features, short films, short series? In those cases, the first thing you need are samples! I think the best combo is 1 sample from a show that already exists to show you can handle someone else's characters and then an original to show your voice. I hope that helps!

Hey Eric, Thanks for the videos and being here. In one of your other videos you mentioned Linkedin and that is where I spend 90% of my time and how I pitched my 3D animated film BUGTOPIA and how I got my Emmy nominated producer on board. I just kept adding connections (now at 14K+). I waited until I was REALLY ready for funding before I started pitching to people and got 100+ nos, but that one yes. I am being represented at NATPE 2019 in MIAMI and I have a few questions. I have three (3) incredible prime time 2D animated TV series, properties. I want to pitch to FOX (Sunday nights), TBS (Prime Time), CN [as] (Adult Swim) and Comedy Central as my first choices, but my rep already has two meeting request from two (2) distributors. I have a Emmy nominated producer attached that works on the PJ's (starring Eddie Murphy). I am coming to you for a 2nd opinion. I want as much control as I can get even if that means going to a smaller TV network to gain a rep or stature and then go back to the bigger TV networks. I want EP, Created By, Written by and etc. I might NOT get everything,but??? 1) Based on what I want, what would suggest based on your industry experience to go through a distributor or directly to TV networks to get the best deal and imagine a bidding war? 2) Based on bringing an Emmy nominated producer to the table what kind of leverage can I practically have?
@SurvivingAnimation

Hey there and thanks for watching! Good questions! Sounds like you have a nice talent package for your show, but that you also don't directly have any large entertainment credits nor experience in the industry as of yet (as far as I know). Conservatively, I would say the priority is to get a deal signed at this stage rather than pushing yourself as a senior position on the project. Of course, you're still always the original creator and should be compensated and credited as such. But for a show to perform really well, it will require experienced writers and above-the-line talent to execute with any reliability over a full series order. So, make sure the team that is hired agrees with your vision and then let them do what they do best. If you're lucky enough to have all this happen, then you can leverage yourself much harder on your series after that! As for having an Emmy-nominated producer, it's good and helps (I'm one too!), but it's not going to sell the project on its own. If anything, that producer should be well-equipped to bring on other quality talent, animation production services, and the experience to make sure you deliver on time and on budget! OK I hope that all helps!

If you're new to the animation industry, I would suggest reaching-out to talent agencies specializing in animation. I see that you're an actor. Perhaps ask your agent to help you navigate the right agencies and make the proper introductions?
