Ankle lock defense in bjj and grappling is a must to know at any level. The basic or traditional ankle lock is one of the first and most common leg lock attacks students learn. The main mistake that I see a lot of people make, is that they try to immediately pull their leg out of the lock. This is very risky because if you don't fully pull your foot out, the lock will only get tighter. When you pull back, the ankle lock isolates lower on more of your ankle joint instead of the lock being up higher and closer to your calf muscle where it's harder to finish.
In this video, we cover two main ankle lock defenses and escapes. The best option is to get your foot to the floor with weight on that foot if your opponent allows you to come up. If not, you have another option that I cover in the video.
