I build the second of three "impossible" antennae. The WATER antenna.
Consists of two pieces of 1/4" I.D. clear vinyl tubing, 4 plugs for the ends of the tubing, 12ga solid copper pulled from Romex house wire (used to make the probes into the tubes), some scrap wood to support things, TAP WATER, and some RG8X feedline.
SWR on the analyzer showed usable (though not great) values for the frequencies of the two repeaters I wanted to use (local club and a statewide NET) in 2 meter and useable SWR across the entire 70cm band (2.1 high and as low as 1.1).
As this was a proof of concept build, that was sufficient and I put it on the air. 10 watts made the 29 mile trip to the repeater with a signal strong enough that higher power was not needed. It was run at 25 and 50 watts and signal quality improved but not enough to warrant the higher power.
I will refine this and tweak it as well as use different fluids.
