I really like your interview style and your collabing with other creators, it'd be so cool if one day you developed these into a podcast series or something and we could go really deep into these topics

I think what she is describing around 10 minutes is known as the "Sunk Cost Fallacy".

Yes, it's the sunk cost fallacy. It's like a gambler who has gambled away most of their rent, they will keep going with the rest of their rent money, in the hopes for that one big break to win it all back.

Calling rachel hollis a lifestyle influencer is generous lol I see her more as like a speaker for mlms and an author that plagiarizes lol

Keep going with these great videos Charlotte! I found you due to a FB friend having this weird motivational stuff all over her feed and this amazing 'online business' she was earning a fortune from supposedly. No info, no product, no company but I was really concerned for her - all her FB friends were cardboard copies of each other - all these selfies and titles such as Ruby Leader, Diamond Promotion, giving up their 9-5, earning income from their phone etc. I was WTF? After much research I found out it was Valentus. Then I saw your videos on it which led me to even more anti-MLM content. I have my own MLM story from the early 90s but that was before social media and now because of technology what is going on is shocking. I have some screen shots of these huns' 'marketing' strategy I will DM you if I have chance, as it is so contradictory and, yes I keep using this word, also really shocking!! Also there is a great video Munecat did on LuLaRoe where she talks why all these MLMs come out of Utah and the connection to the Mormon philosophy - fascinating xxx Oh and I mentioned all this to my mum and she said an MLM was how her ex-husband lost their house in the 70s!! I never knew!!!

They are cults!! I experienced the recruitment and omg the perfectly worded msgs to every single concern or question I had was scary. I remember thinking if I wasn’t a critical thinker this cult would def get me.. 😟😅

I found your first videos when an acquaintance was trying to recruit me for Arbonne. At the time she was almost offended that I wanted to google first and didn't believe her about the company at face value. I'm very glad I insisted on looking things up for myself, and glad I found your content. Thanks for preventing me from making a huge mistake!

Another interesting article to read on this topic is an article by C Thi Nguyen, Why It's As Hard To Escape An Echo Chamber As It Is To Flee A Cult (aeon.co/essays/why-its-as-hard-to-escape-an-echo-chamber-as-it-is-to-flee-a-cult ). It also offers a little bit of an understanding as to how to help someone 'escape' (TL;DR: make them feel understood and heard, not becritise them)

In mary Kay, our scripts for the skin care parties included “god first, family second, career third”. I’m not religious, so this felt very strange for me to say.... I started skipping it after a while. In the weekly meetings, the directors often talked about God and quoted from the Bible. Made me uncomfortable..... and we were encouraged to bring guests to the meetings. I had a few friends who were completely turned off by this. I honestly was not sure why I stayed so long. So this makes a lot of sense.

Total agree with the positive and negative because I was told i was such a negative person when i expressed to my mentor about having a bad day. She was like well if you react like that everything in your life is going to be negative, which didn't really make sense to me

Another great video Charlotte! Brilliant to listen to a professional talking about psychology. Makes it difficult to pick holes in the “MLM is a cult” argument. I’m so glad this community is growing and I hope more people engage with your type of educational videos. ❤️

Oh god... I’ll be honest, I’m a bit shocked about The Secret. 😞 Mostly because, I know you’re right and I’m pretty sad about it. I was introduced to the book and movie when I was 14, and, to put it bluntly, I was dying of anorexia. This concept gave me hope, and it’s the only reason I recovered. I totally agree with you, but I’d never thought of it before and feel so sad now...

That’s why I wanted to highlight that it’s a nuanced topic! I’m so so happy it helped you recover from your ED, that’s amazing! We just have to be careful with resources like the secret because they can also be used in pretty disturbing ways to keep people in cults such as MLMs. If it’s helped you improve your mental health then that’s great, and keep doing it! Just also know that it’s okay to have negative thoughts and feelings, and that you have definitely not brought any of your bad mental health upon yourself! ❤️

No, patriotism and religion being intertwined is absolutely not a specifically American thing. Just random pieces of misinformation being thrown out there and stated as fact, makes someone seem less than reliable. I really enjoyed your interviews with people about sharing experiences, but this one seems to make me want to believe the interviewee is an expert, which she is obviously not.
@charlottenaomi3

Robin wasn’t saying that it doesn’t exist elsewhere, just that that’s what she’s perceived as an American

I’m American, so the interview is based on my experiences living in the USA, and the MLMs here. As much as I wish I could speak to other parts of the world, I haven’t been exposed to MLM culture there, and wouldn’t feel comfortable speaking to that. Sad to know it happens elsewhere as well! Separation of religion and government is so important.
