I’m a longtime Garmin user. The Apple Watch has always been interesting as an Apple user, but the battery life was a no go. I was on a Fenix 7 Sapphire for 8 months when the Ultra came out and decided to give it a go. I sold the Fenix. I’m impressed with the Ultra, it is lacking in some regards, particularly around interpreting metrics, but is very capable as a smartwatch. As for battery life, I’m averaging 30-50 minutes of GPS per day and 1-1.5 hours of workouts, no cellular, Bluetooth and wifi on, always on display except for ~8 hours while sleeping and during workouts, and getting a consistent average of 1.666% of battery use per hour or 60 hours of battery life. Very impressed with GPS accuracy, getting very consistent tracking and no issues under thick tree cover. I’m into trail running, but not so much really long distances, stick to under 25k/½ marathon max mostly, but could see going out to a 50k or 50 mile at some point and I think the Ultra will be able to handle it fine. Backpacking is what I’m worried about and might need to invest in a power bank for.

I'm pretty disappointed, to be honest. Here’s why: 1. When you use the Apple Watch as a phone replacement, the battery will surely run out within the first 18 hours. 2. The extended battery life is only achievable with moderate use and a phone nearby. 3. It’s another accessory to take care of and charge almost every day. In conclusion, the current models seem to increase dependency, cause battery anxiety, and add more things to worry about during the day. I used the Apple Watch 1 and have to say it has only gotten more complicated since then. If you’re looking for a fitness device that doesn’t require daily attention, this device isn’t necessary at all. I’ve thought about this a lot and, although I’m a huge fan of Apple products, this device and Apple Watches in general are just another thing you have to take care of, rather than the other way around.

Battery life has been one single thing keeping me away from getting an Apple Watch. The specced 18-36 hrs simply is a no-no for me. My current watch (non-apple product) keeps up and running for almost 2 weeks with the settings I need. So my question is, if I don't want to keep display always on, turn off all the connectivity completely (I can check messages etc directly from my phone), no wifi, no cellular, occasional gps (when running), heart rate etc health sensors always on - how long would an Apple Watch tick?

I recently upgraded and seriously considered the Apple watch. In the end I settled for a Fenix 7 Sapphire Solar, which at current prices are a fair bit cheaper than the Apple Ultra, but that was not my main reason. I think, like indicated in this video, that the apple watch outcompetes almost everything else in being a smart watch but for being a sport watch I still prefer the Fenix 7, which is a tool more so than a social media gateway, or an entertainment system for that matter. I do on average 1.5 hours of different tracked activity per day, and aside from that I use the watch mainly as a watch, and I get at least 8 days of battery life from a full charge, and sometimes more if the sun has been shining. I am sure the Apple watch is great and if money was no object I would probably have one in addition to my Garmin watch, just for fun.

And it's with very minimal usage, I have lte turned off, it's always near my iphone, without any workouts etc. I called support multiple times, and I brought my watch to official apple service they didn't find any defects and told me that 25 hours is more than a day so it's all good. With support I tried everything - updating ios, apple watch, removing watch application from iphone unpairing/reseting etc. I even asked someone to try it with different phone, it was the same. So nothing helped. My old series 7 watch lasts 30-35 hours even when I use them much more. I understand from reviews that probably it could be some rare problem nevertheless I wanted to share.

This would have been even better if you had made a table at the end for all the modes and showing heart rate/GPS status and ping rates, music downloaded/streamed, etc. as a summary diagram.

This is the video I've been waiting for. They've changed the way the cellular works I guess some time ago after I stopped using it. It didn't used to switch by itself. On that note great video and was exactly what I was looking for before buying my watch. I had already taken the plunge though because I visited the store and it was in stock in my desired loop configuration this weekend.

So for my use case, I currently have an Apple Watch 7 and a Fenix, the Ultra would replace my AW7. Not happening. Maybe we will see something much better with Gen 2 of the AWU.

So not really a big loss in battery life with always on display turned on?

It has an effect but it's not huge.

To me, and i am a huge apple dude, i have a phone to look up everything. I don’t need a Apple Watch which is basically a smaller iphone. AI have the garmin fenix 7x sapphire solar and love it for what it is. 30 day battery life, every second of the day heart rate, pulse ox, compass, barometer, sleep tracking, many gps signals to choose from, a real flashlight on the watch, and i can keep going. Maybe in 5 years time apple will come close to fitness tracking like garmin. But until then, i will stick to garmin

I have to say the Apple Watch Ultra is a huge step forward for Apple, but the battery life still needs to be increased and feedback on the metrics is much needed. 12 hours with the default settings is too low, 17 hours with low power mode is more acceptable, but still leaves many people behind, those doing the "ultra" kind of run which is implied in the watch name. If apple manages to improve over those points in the next generations, it will be a serous competitor for brands such as Garmin, Polar, Suunto o r Coros. For me a typical scenario I do a few times a month is the one I did yesterday: charging the watch before I go to sleep, sleep with it, leave my home around 4:30am, and get back home 12 hours later, with some driving, eating, and an 8-10 hours GPS activity in between. The watch using the defaults would probably record my activity but would die before I get home in the best case scenario, or it would simply die before finishing my activity at all. Using low power may give more battery to spare, but I don't see it surviving to the next day. I have a very basic Polar Vantage M2, with the previous scenario my watch had around 50% battery when I got home, and still has 38% left which will probably last me until Wednesday doing my regular early jogs in the morning and my gym activity in the night.

Great video and just the informationI was looking for. Thank you. One question: Did we ever learn more about the Power Optimization?

Dude, this thing rips!!! Can wait to see what the apple watch becomes over the next few years :) We are spoiled with the options we have in 2022.

Easily reach 3 days of normal use here, and thats a huge step up from my series 7 which was 10% at 24hrs

long story short very bad battery life at this price range.

Depends what you're looking for. This is essentially a cell phone strapped to your wrist. In that sense the battery life is great. But if you look at it like a sport watch... it's not as impressive.

Having been stuck on the couch due to covid I’ve been getting almost 3 days of constant wear time in regular mode i.e. NOT power save mode (although sleep focus enabled at night, which means display off).
