I have two defender tarps and let me tell you these are by far the best tarps I have ever owned and I have owned many tarps. Aqua Quest tarps are the best money can buy as far as I'm concerned. I have had tarps fail on me before but I've never had an Aqua Quest tarp fail on me. When you buy a defender tarp you will know as soon as you take it out that it is a really good quality tarp, everything on that tarp is double reinforced with all loops triple box stitched. If your looking for the best buy an Aqua Quest.

Man, I have the 10X10 Defender (the best on the market)...and this is the best vid' I've ever seen on these tarps. This man deserves to get paid for this endorsement!! Well done! I'm gonna' pick up the Safari in the spring, because mine is quite hefty (around 5 LBS). Great for the trunk though. The Safari will be almost just as good, at a much appreciated fraction of the weight.

Thanks for the comparison, Ben. I started my tarp preps with the snugpak all weather tarp. It stays in the bug out bag. Then, I moved up to the Aqua Quest 10x10 defender. this one is way to heavy for bag carry, so it stays in the car emergency kit. Would love to see a comparison of the Snugpak 10x10 ($55) and the AQ 10x10 Safari ($80). Seems to me that they are quite similar.

Snugpak has the price, AQ has a little better quality. I agree though the snugpak is perfect fora BOB and the defender perfect for a car kit or extended use.

Nice review. Been meaning to pick up one of these. Looks like Defender is the only one that comes in cammo pattern? I like hiking and stealth camping. Would prefer one of the lighter tarps in cammo. Safari series in OD would suffice I suppose.

Tracy Reed The large and the smaller Safari tarps come in camo or olive drab. Only the 10x10 tarp is olive drab only. Perhaps that will change.

Good review, but please don't use the term "grommets". Grommets are the donut hole metal rings you see on cheap tarps. The attachment points on the Aqua Quest are called webbing loops.

I'm deciding between getting the Safari or a DD tarp. It's mostly going to be used for a lightweight tarp pitching at the beach as a sun shade, but sometimes to maybe use as a hammock tarp. Or should I get a guide instead. I definitely want it to be light and portable, but I also don't want to skimp on duribility. Which would you guys recommend?
@livingsurvival

Check out the Aqua Quest Guide series. Lighter than the Safari.

Living Survival thanks for the advice! So the duribility of the guide won't be an issue? I don't intend on using it as a ground tarp. It's primary use would be to block rain and sun. Thanks!

not s grommet its a tieout... a grommet typically circular made out of some type alloy & incorporated right into the tarp..

Go Bigger for that tiny extra bit of weight and you'll be glad you did when your sunny wkend turns soar and you are stuck under 10X10 trying to keep your feet/pack/friend/dog/gear and fire dry. Yup I'm talkin' 20x13. Shape it, fold it compress strap it and you'll be happy you carried those extra ounces.

Sonny D 20’ x 13’ ???? loloolo... whole point carrying a tarp is to minimize weight, volume... if ur going go that big might as well bring a tent...13’ x 20’ ...... ahahahaha

wow, these look really over priced and heavy! 140 dollars for a 675gram tarp that packs up to the size of a nalgeen bottle compared to for example a DD ultralight tarp, it's half the price and one third the weight and pack Size!
@livingsurvival

The standard DD is about the same weight as the AQ Safari but only Poly coated. Meaning they use less quality ripstop and more coating. AQ uses higher quality ripstop with sil/poly coating that is lighter. Same for their ultralight and XL models. I've used both Snugpak/DD tarps and in my opinion the AquaQuest are higher quality all the way around. Yes they are a little more expensive but where do you see $140? They are $79 in the states.

Living Survival from their website. Guide sil tarp. 3X3 meters, 30X14X6 cm packed. 675 grams 139.95 dollars. They are better quality how? I have been running with my DD ultralight since they starting making them and it's still in good order. No rips or tears! Still keeping me dry. That's all it has to do. The DD is 3X2.9 meters nylon ripstop with a pu waterproof coating. weighs 460 grams and packs down to a tiny size. I can fit it all in a canteen cup. has 19 reinforced attachment points It costs 65 pounds!
