Des Moines is blessed with an impressive architectural portfolio. Famed architect Mies van der Rohe made his mark here in the 1960s with not one, but two structures - one at Drake University and one downtown, which is the inspiration for this ArchiTreasure. With a simplicity in keeping with its design, the Home Federal Savings and Loan opened for business in November, 1962 receiving a grand welcome. Sadly, in the 1990s, the building faced an uncertain future amid the nationwide savings and loan crisis. Worried it would be demolished, architecture buffs from around the world mounted a letter-writing campaign, and rescued it from the wrecking ball. A Local philanthropist bought the building and donated it to the Diocese of Des Moines in 1992, where it sits across the street from the Diocese’s St. Ambrose Cathedral, another architectural gem. In June, 2018 the Catholic Pastoral Center unveiled a $10 million makeover of the architectural landmark which had been hailed as a "magnificent harmony" of steel, glass and stone” when it opened in 1962.
