Recognized as one of the "most endangered" historic buildings in Iowa, the former Masonic Temple was on tap for demolition until its developer, Downtown Preservation Partners, took a big gamble to preserve the building. Renewed and renamed, The Temple For Performing Arts was given new life with renovations completed in October of 2002.
While there are many historical structures that are restored and repurposed, this one is remarkable for the subsequent and sustained impact it had on downtown development and the Western Gateway of a blossoming downtown Des Moines. In its pre-renovation state, the building had been stripped of its original cornice and awnings, and nearly all of the exterior windows had fallen into disrepair. While the real jewel of The Temple was its interior architecture, ID8, the renovation architects, and their team, worked diligently to restore the outside of the building to its original state as well.
The vision was realized: to create an urban catalyst that would compel people to come, stay and enjoy downtown. They transformed the old Masonic Temple into a 21st century city center for arts, entertainment, culture and learning for all ages. Today, with food businesses on the street floor and gorgeous rental spaces above, such as the Grand Hall and the black box theater, the building is home to receptions, weddings, concerts and meetings.
