There's a reason they're not for sale in the EU at least though-they don't meet our quality control regulations. They're also tested for incidental use, not sustained outdoor activities we may need sun protection for-a day at the beach or in the park for example. - the typical wearer in Japan and Korea doesn't stay out in the sun like that, wears hats, uses parasols and often protective clothing so that's why they're formulated differently. I trust European sunscreens more tbh and know they're formulated and tested for typical European use. And how do you know Asian sunscreens are all within date if you buy them online? ss should to be used within a year of manufacture.

PSA: Be careful when buying sunscreen from international retail websites that ship products to the U.S. Many of them are not authorized retailers for the brands they’re selling which means they can potentially be selling you anything inside a bottle - whether it be counterfeit, expired, tainted product, etc. You can always check a brand’s list of authorized retailers by going to their main website or getting in contact with their customer service. It’s better to be protected with a U.S. sunscreen than to risk your health and skin on a non-authorized international sunscreen.

As a European. I didn't have trouble finding a sunscreen that looks and feels good on my skin, which really helped me not avoid applying it regularly. I think this is really important if we want everyone to apply regularly, and it's a shame that ppl in the US are not able to experience this commodity in the extent that we do. I have 4 in rotation - 2 more expensive (Ultrasun and Eucerin), and 2 drugstore. The Ultrasun is my favorite for sure, and I found that my face really agrees with the trinosorb filter. I’m curious though- you say one of the differences is that the Us regulates sunscreen as a drug, and the the EU does not. But Aussie sunscreens are also regulated as a medication, they are also subject to very strict requirements, yet we have better sunscreens than the US. We have more up to date UV filters, and it’s required that higher UV sunscreens always be Broad Spectrum (as far as I’m aware, because everything available here is broad spectrum). So I don’t think the problem that causes the US to be so far behind is that it’s regulated as a drug. Australia has better sunscreens. To be fair, it’s only recently that Aussie sunscreens have started to work on being more elegantly formulated to feel nice on the face. Our sunscreens have typically been seen as workhorses- they need to be able to work on the body, and protect people while they’re at an Aussie beach. Which is likely the absolute worst place in the world for UV. So older (or cheaper) sunscreens do tend to be less elegant. They might feel a bit greasy. Though there are now lovely facial sunscreens that are much lighter and less greasy on the skin. We also allow certain EU sunscreens to be sold here (like La Roche Posay), as well as certain Asian sunscreens. I just feel, as a consumer, a lot more certain and comfortable buying a sunscreen that is allowed to be sold here in Australia, because we do have really stringent standards. I feel reassured that what I buy is as good as it says it will be, that it will protect me. So given that, I wonder why the US is still so far behind? If the FDA just allowed the new filters (which do have evidence behind them), then it would be the best of both worlds- having reassurance that it’s regulated, but being able to access the best possible products. Edit: I had a look at our regulations, and yes, broad spectrum is mandatory for all sunscreens over SPF30. In order to qualify as broad spectrum, it must satisfy both the US and the EU standards. So after reading the information from the TGA (our version of FDA, only it deals purely with drugs), I feel even more reassured as an Aussie consumer. It also explained why some sunscreens that are sold as high SPF in other countries, are downgraded to lower SPF in the Australian market.

I just recently started using LRP SPF 50 Anthelios Tinted Mineral for my face and was amazed how nicely it goes on. I'm a cyclist with Type IV skin that spends many hours outdoors so sunscreen is definitely part of my pre-ride prep. Looking forward to trying another LRP sunscreen for my arms and legs once I finish off the tube of Alba Botanica that I currently have.

I live il Italy and yes, Europe is strict about regulations on what's on the market. Italy is even more. I ordered a setting powder from China ones, and custom sent it back because it didn't match the regulations. Talking about sunscreens, I've only used Italian/European ones because are the easiest to find. And actually because I know I can trust them. Before seeing this video anyway I was annoyed by the fact that the bottle never say how high is the UVA protection. Especially in Italy, we only have the rounded UVA symbol (sorry I don't know how to say that in English), but not the +++++ indication (which would be very helpful). Now that I've seen your video, I can relax about it 😄😅 I've tried a lot of sun creams but now I've narrowed down to a few: -Rilastil sun system water touch fluid 50+ -Bionike defence sun anti shine fluid 50+ -Nivea sun soothing sensitive for face 50 -Garnier fluid (the new extra light one) 50 Thank you for this video, it was very helpful

As pharmacist and safety assessor for regulations, Claims for UVA protection by various products differ between countries. In Japan, four grades of PA (protection grade of UVA) are indicated, which is based on the UVAPF value. The EU requires indicating a “Broad spectrum” or “UVA protection” claim on sunscreen products, if the UVAPF is at least 1/3 of the labeled SPF and its minimum critical wavelength is 370 nm. In the United States, the FDA requires that the term “Broad Spectrum” be used only on products with a minimum critical wave- length of 370 nm and an SPF of 15 or higher. Moreover, the product information must state that using sunscreen may reduce the risk of skin cancer and skin aging. Other countries have regulations similar to those of Japan or EU. Common regulation practices, however, are not yet established. As explained above, regulations regarding UVA protection of the sunscreen differ throughout the world. So we can't say that a sunscreen is better than another because they all supposed to do the job reducing UV exposure, it's matter on adding new filter, more up to date regulations and more cosmetically elegant formulation. Great vid Dr 🙏❤️
