I have a Goldring Lenco L75 which is an idler drive and can be bought for cheap. Great sounding deck for the money in my opinion. Interesting vid as usual, cheers.

Rick G Yeah, I’m aware. I just mentioned the L75 in case anyone new to idlers was looking for an affordable alternative. 👍🏻

Giant, I think you can get an L75 in Europe for a reasonable price still. Not so easy in the USA anymore, as there were never that many of them here to begin with. I think the idler wheel vintage bargains are in broadcast transcription turntables in the USA, or in a Fairchild turntable, if you can find one. These were sold as transcription turntables at the time. I believe the Fairchild drive mechanisms were a hybrid of belt and idler; which was supposed to decouple the motor from the idler. This idea was sound enough for others to copy. Then of course there are the various Elac (Benjamin) Miracord turntables, Dual, and Perpetuum Ebner turntables; many of which came with multiplayer spindles and mechanically driven automatic features; but these can be stripped away if you wish, and PE did make some manual models (very difficult to find in the USA). Any of these options will give you a taste of the PRAT that an idler driven turntable offers; at various levels of fidelity.

Thanks gents for yet another inspiring jazz and vinyl video. I love it when you mention a record I already own (Mulligan/Webster) yet haven't played in a while. The comments and perspectives of another jazz music lover give different insights and perspectives that make you want to listen again and opens up the work for more enjoyment. One Flight up is also a favorite- the percussion at the forefront and the unique interplay make this one stand out as a work that is timeless. Thanks for the mention about the David Grisman Quintet, I love acoustic style jazz, already sampled it, already ordered it. I'll leave you with my favorite acoustic jazz LP- "Tributaries" by Larry Coryell. A little bit over the top "virtuosity" but enough melody to make it a keeper. Peace and all the best. Tony.

Didn’t know much about Art but enjoy this taste in music and he is spot on about Lady in Satin , I get his Dylan comparison... more about delivery than voice. I personally like Ornette the more I listen. Friend offered me OG Stereo NM of The Shape of Jazz. To Come for price that makes me swallow hard. Thinking of counter offering. Anyway , this is great stuff.

Oho! The full name of the Gerry Mulligan album that Art recommended at the top of his list, is "Gerry Mulligan Quartet / Chubby Jackson Big Band, 1953, Moonlight in Vermont, with Chet Baker," and I'm listening to it, right now, on Spotify. It's =wonderful!= Sweet, sweet interplay of Mulligan on saxophone and Baker blowing his horn. And, yeah, I know, Spotify is one of the budget streaming services, not the highest quality, but I've got a family plan, and it lets me hear lots of stuff that I wouldn't be able to afford to hear, otherwise. 😎

mkfmkf55 Yeah, as opposed to belt drive and direct drive sound, in general terms.. There are some exceptions with certain models that you can’t really pin down where they “place”.. IMHO.
