I laugh when I hear the NES or SNES wasn't powerful enough for certain game types since pretty much every modern game type was at least attempted on the 2600. First person games like Crypts of Chaos, Tunnel Runner & Excape from the Mind master were precursors to the FPSs of today. Yes they used enhancement chips but to be fair many NES & SNES games did also. The 2600 also had first person flight, tank & driving games; Star Raiders, Star Ward Arcade, Battle zone, night driver, Endro, etc. Early platformers like Pitfall are clearly precursors to Mario & the like. Adventure, Pitfall 2, ET, Superman, Raiders of the Lost Ark, etc all laid the blueprints for games like Zelda & even open world games of today. Dragonstomper is an RPG game that is the grandaddy of Dragon Warrior & Final Fantasy. For as primitive & underpowered as the Atari 2600 was it did everything.

There was a Yars' revenge reboot of sorts in 2011 for Xbox 360 and Windows. Also, as far as a pop culture cameo, in the episode of Miami Vice called "Milk Run," there is a shootout at an electronics store at the airport and one of the characters crashes through a display case and there are Yars' Revenge boxes scattered everywhere.

Loved Yars Revenge. As a big fan of the game and a recent fan of your channel, i had to watch this vid. I did see another interesting thing on this game in someone else’s video recently, and he showed how the safe zone where you are unable to shoot but also unable to be killed is actually code from the game. The area shows 7 columns (out of 8) which is binary addressing/commands Its crazy to think that Howard Scott Warshaw did so awesome of a game with so little resources

They had several games with comic books, some featuring space explorers. Perhaps it was to set up the ill-conceived Swordquest series and contests. Fireworld is considered by some who played it to be the worst Atari game. If you could advance in that game it gave you page numbers to look up code words in the comic; then if you got them all you had to pick some of them to send in. Then if you qualified, because there were more "winners" than expected, you had to write an essay saying why you thought the game was the greatest of all time to be chosen to go to the tournament.

Some of these details are interesting to know. As I played Yars' Revenge it came to a point where I had suspected that Yars' Revenge game play was similar to Star Castle in that I had included that when I submitted that question to Atari Age, but they could not answer that question. There was a few occasions that I would get the HSW initials, but I thought that it was done by hitting the swirl in mid-air several times in succession? But I never noticed that line in the explosion before. But I did not know was that the Yars' Revenge explosion being a representation of the game's source code? What about the Neutral Zone? It looks kind of like the explosion. As you may know, at the Atari Age site has a few programmers which came out with a few who hacked Yar's Revenge to create new versions called "Yar's Defeat", a prequel to Yars' Revenge, in which you play the role of a member of the Qotile Continuum, in which the characters are reversed. "Yar Vs. Yar" in which this time it's against a Yar who has joined forces with the Qotile Continuum.

You position your Yar on the black line below the explosion as it closes to trigger the Easter Egg. 11. The safety zone in the middle of the screen uses the actual game code to display its patterns. Ray Kassar didn't think that should be done because "what if" someone could figure out the code from that?? 12. Yars' Revenge had a CGI commercial shown in movie theaters.

I think Raiders of the Lost Ark was worse than _E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial._ I was able to win E.T. as a twelve-year-old after learning how to get out of the pits, but didn't win the Indy game. Everything I did in Raiders was in the manual, and I didn't learn anything new on my own, playing it in the '80s or '90s. It turns out kids called Atari to get sent the walkthrough so they could beat it. Once walkthroughs were posted on the internet, I learned how to use the shovel to win, as well as to find the secret Yar. Then I learned that using the grenade to get into the sundial chamber cost you points, but there was no way to get a perfect score. I was able to win on my own three Scott Adams text adventures on the VIC-20, so I think it was the game, not me.

I have no idea what the appeal of this game is. Never have. It looks way, waaaaaaaay too simple.
@GenXGrownUp

"Looks way...too simple" suggests that you haven't played it, or perhaps you didn't experience it the context of '82-'83. The basic premise is certainly quite simple by today's standards, but for the 2600, Yars' was a leap forward in visual presentation and fast-paced arcade-style gameplay.

I'm not joking. Not everyone likes rap (or nerdcore whatever that is) and I don't see why anyone would think it's a good choice to accompany videos about 80s video games. Shame as I liked the video apart from that.

Thanks for taking the time to provide feedback, Rob. The reality is, regardless of a style we choose there will always be someone who doesn't like it -- you can't please everyone, right? As for why it would accompany videos about the '70s & '80s (we cover much more than just video games, btw), rap was created and matured in the '70s & '80s just like children of Generation X. It's an integral part of the cultural fabric of GenX, even if you don't like it. 😀

@@robm8809 Considering Rap was born in the 80s I think it is completely appropriate. Honestly, I don't care if you appreciate it or not, but I will say that perhaps you should try creating some content yourself before you ask others to change what they've done. Beefy is a singular talent is his profession and I was very proud to hear his music on these videos. Oh, and before I forget, fuck you. :)
