I find it weird how you think that not being religious is some kind of a personality type. Scepticism is when you don't accept a hypothesis as truth without any evidence. I don't think that you need to be particularly sceptical to understand that mythical creatures are not real. Myths are not hypotheses.

In an environment where most everyone is a thing, not being that thing does become an identity. Rightfully so I'd say, people band together around traits they are excluded for from the rest of society.

@@dawnkeyyI don't believe in god(s). I don't make it a fundamental part of my identity though. That would be the views of morality I have, every core belief that I hold, my wants, my fears, etc. Some of those parts were influenced by different religious individuals, some of them weren't, some of them were beliefs that I pretty much developed by myself. Most of which have little to nothing to do with a god or the absence of gods in any direct way. That's why it's so odd because this seems to be the case with most people who would consider themselves athiest or agnostic. Most people who don't believe don't make their absence of belief a fundamental part of their identity, religious individuals generally do. There's an asymmetry here which is that I have lack the same incentive to put any one thing in my life on a single pedestal the same way someone might with a god. I do find the discourse surrounding it slightly interesting though.

So you want to keep us around to stir the pot and challenge your beliefs-just not too hard? We are not allowed to reach our own conclusions, but we are still useful to you. Why should we care if you "value" us? I'm an atheist for one reason: I haven't seen any evidence that anything was ever brought into existence by essentially wishing it to be so.

My atheism comes after 25 years of Christianity. I know there is nothing I can say to help you understand why I changed my beliefs, you'd have to experience life and your own journey to get there. What I will say is that I appreciate your sentiment, but I'm valid on my own. I don't need pity, just as you don't. We should just show mutual respect. Showing respect differs from having respect but it's free and beneficial for both parties. I'm not missing anything in my life, and frankly I'm more fulfilled and confident now than ever before. That isn't a jab at Christianity or me being a punk. In fact I live my life similarly to Christians and most people don't know I'm not a practicing Christian. That's me sharing my experience. I don't ever try to convert anyone or show them the light or explain why they're wrong. It's counterproductive. Do what is right for you and your family, and don't feel any obligation to feel pity for those who aren't the type of believer you are. ❤️

it's great to have a debate pal, atheist or any other background, who can prompt you to walk through your own reasoning to its basic premises. atheists tend to have done some introspection to leave a faith community so it makes sense those mental muscles would be well-developed, but i imagine that could also be found in others who have introspected a lot for other reasons.

My problem with the god I was indoctrinated with is this... He knows everything. He knows the future. He knows who is going to heaven from the start. So how does that work? If I have free will god can not know the future. If he can not know the future he isn't all powerful. If he does know the future (and there can only ever be one future, just as there is only one past) then I can not have a choice in my choices, therefore.... You get the idea, and for the life (and the eternal one) of me, I can't get around this very obvious flaw. There are attempts to get around it but it starts becoming silly, but feel free to have a go...

So you hope I become a Christian. I'm open to that. All you have to do is provide the quantity and quality of valid, unflawed evidence for your God and I will. But in the 65 years of my life Christians either run away from the challenge or make typically flawed attempts to provide evidence.

When you look at the law of causality and the law of conservation of mass you can see the paradoxical nature of the world we live in, therefore we can conclude that whatever created matter and caused the universe would have to be above the natural law "super natural"and all powerful to do so otherwise it's just another chicken and egg paradox. The evidence for Christianity is in the eyewitness reports in the new testament all history is eyewitness reports. And the prophecy of the crucifixion being foreshadowed all across the old testament.

I am in a somewhat rare position as I believe in God as an intelligent creator with powers beyond our understanding, however, if it were up to me, I would wish that it weren't so, and that the universe' creation be an inexplicable fact. I find life to have so much more meaning if it's created by people, rather than given by a superior being. I am also a staunch secular but believe the lessons of Christianity need to be respected and merit a good faith understanding from the part of atheists. Good day to you from Belgium.

So, it's okay to be skeptical and use critical thinking, as long as we don't apply that to Christianity? That's not valuing us for us, it's valuing us for how we can benefit YOU.

Not only that but if they genuinely believe it is the truth and all will eventually know this...skepticism should be welcome as you should have faith God overcomes all anyway.

Do Christians such as yourself😊 Who value the "doubting Thomas" sceptic atheist within Christian family's, and communities, because they question what they've been "encouraged" to believe🤔 Interesting😊 Do you,or other Christians question with introspection what you on an individual level what the individual Christian believes, who do you continue to accept the narrative in which they feed you from an archaic book written by multiple authors through multiple centuries from a Middle Eastern, and Paganistic Greece, and Rome Italy s culture, and Their perspectives, along with the various interpretation? own intersections; in order to test what you believe?😊

I agree with the comment that said atheism ≠ skepticism. I was born and raised in Europe, Italy to be precise, and being non-religious has just been the norm for as long as I can remember. In all the classes I went to, 90%+ of the kids didn't believe. It was actually pretty weird to be a believer. I know it because I was one for a couple of years, and yeah kids will mock you if you're weird, no matter the culture. But anyway, THAT was my "skeptic" phase, if you wanna put it like that. My parents didn't believe, nor did so many of my friends' parents, heck not even my grandma (my grampa did, that's how I got into the religion for that brief period). Do you guys realise all this? These places actually exist. The younger Europe is like this, then what about Asia? And yeah I lived in what's supposed to be the heart of the biggest denomination of Christianity, still, that's the situation. Religious people from heavily religious countries like the US will never be able to see the bubble in perspective. I'm not here to "checkmate theist" anyone, it's just something to think about.

Not possible, you can't be a Christian and be skeptical about Christianity. You mentioned doubting Thomas is exactly why you can't. He was one of Jesus's 12 disciple so he didn't doubt His existence or His godhood, he only doubted His resurrection, just because he was the only one who hasn't met Jesus after His death. And yet Jesus calls him faithless.

I’m sorry but this came off as ingenuine, implying our only value is to benefit you as a Christian. Also, how does one engage in a debate without the use of logic, which you can’t apply to faith? That’s not a debate, it’s a one-sided opinion-based shutdown. Kinda like politics honestly lol
