This piece was composed based on an image of “a map that charts out a route that guides people to their hopes and dreams.” As maps are needed to find one’s way, the piece was entitled “Atlas” (which is not a reference to the titan Atlas in Greek mythology). Its subtitle “a map to the futures dream” goes beyond simply creating a geographical image as this map aims to guide people in navigating the difficult choices in life as they stride towards their dream to find their calling in life with unyielding determination.
As for the performance of this piece, please perform the opening fanfare in a manner that creates an image of people striding forward resolutely. The time signature of 6/8 in Section “B” evokes an image of people finding their way into a future illuminated by hope. The opening fanfare motif is then recapitulated in 6/8. Please perform this section according to the musical nuances by paying attention to its composition and imagery while creating appropriate variations in the intensity of the performance.
I do not believe that it is necessary for small ensembles to reproduce the same kind of volume and power that large ensembles possess. Please perform the sections marked with “forte” by creating a rich and wonderful sound.
This version has been revised from the current edition by modifying its orchestration so that it can be performed by small ensembles as well.
