Do you have the headphone output of the atomos connected to the mic port of the camera? It's a bit unconventional in the first moment but makes sense.
@AlexSwan

@@ChrisSpiegl Yes, exactly like that. Tried a couple of different cables too but no love. Anyway I realised it only does automatically what you can do manually just as well. If you know how many frames your audio needs to be delayed, you can just punch it in manually and it will sweet. I was hoping it would also fix the audio delay from when you record audio via the camera, not just via the atomos mic input. If I connect a mic to my camera and send video and sound both to the atomos via HDMI my audio is out of sync as well.

There is ZERO latency in an analog audio cable. A 1000ft cable would have the same amount of “delay” as a 1ft cable... 0 delay.
@ChrisSpiegl

Yet there are some kind of delays in a system like this and luckily Atomos provides the tools to solve these types of sync issues. Maybe the audio sync delay is not because of the mic cable but instead it is because of the HDMI one.

With the 4 frame delay, Is that the audio from the rode on top of your camera? I had a shotgun mic plugged into the mic/line input of the atomos, and even after calibration I had a frame delay. Would the delay be solved if I plugged the shotgun into the camera itself and then recorded? Thank you so much.
@ChrisSpiegl

The signal coming through HDMI (audio & video) will most likely already be in sync (and there is no way to change that sync in the Atomos Ninja V anyway). The sync setting only delays the audio sent into the Atomos via the Mic/Line port so that it can be lined up with the audio+video coming in through HDMI. So, when you connect the shotgun mic to the camera directly, the audio & video should be synced "by default".

Nice vid. I'm just curious. What if your camera has no mic input? Can you record using the external monitor with mic attached on it and will it automatically sync with the vid? Thanks.
@ChrisSpiegl
3 жыл бұрын
Hello Vincent, thank you and yes, you can absolutely record a mic into the Atomos Ninja V. The Ninja has a Mic/Line-In port on one side. That one can be switched between Mic or Line Level signal so it works with Microphones and also works with Line Level devices like audio recorders. The signal is recorded all into the same MOV file which also holds the video data. Additionally, not only can you record that mic + the video form the camera. You can even record the video + audio from the camera and the audio that you plugged into the Ninja V. So you'll have 4 channels of audio in one MOV file. The one thing you have to be mindful is is that the Ninja does NOT provide Plug In Power to the microphone (I talked about this in this video: kzitem.info/news/bejne/kmuowI2VrX95iaQ) so you will have to use a microphone that has battery or does not need Plug In Power. I hope that helps you with your decision and is good information for you 🌸.

@ChrisSpiegl

Hi Andersson, the option changes between mic and line level signal. Which means that if your for example sending a signal coming from a Audio Recorder Line Out port into the Atomos, you'd choose the Line Level (-10db). But if you are plugging in a mic directly, you'd probably choose mic level. But the thing is: the Atomos Ninja V does not provide phantom power or plug-in power, so your mic may not work when plugged in to the Ninja at all.

Thanks for this tutorial Chris! Do you recommend plugging in your audio (using 3.5 mm jack cable) from say my Zoom H5 directly into the microphone line of the Atomos Ninja V? Would I get better audio this way versus plugging in my XLR shotgun mic into my Zoom H5 and then routing it into the mic input of my actual camera?
@ChrisSpiegl
2 жыл бұрын
When using the Zoom H5, you would probably get the best signal when simply recording internally on the H5 and then sync in post. But it still is a good idea to route the audio into the camera so that you have the same audio on the Atomos MOV file as you have with the Zoom H5 which makes Sync much much easier. An in that case, I would route through the camera because with the Atomos Ninja V mic/line port you will have to also make sure the frame offset is set correctly which is just even more work to setup.

Oh how I wish Atomos would throw up a warning to calibrate when a mic is plugged in. I had a sennheiser g4 wireless plugged in to my ninja and a shotgun on my camera mic for the first time yesterday and the audio channels are out of sync with each other. The other bummer is that you can’t hear the problem when monitoring though the ninja headphone jack. Ugh
