Great review and well articulated. I just bought this watch yesterday (silver dial, blue sec hand version). I think for $650, you are getting something unique, with excellent quality that stands out. I am pleased to have this in my watch collection.

I got the silver dial with the fauxtina, and I honestly think it's my favorite watch so far this year under $1,500. I can't actually pick out anything wrong with the actual watch. The size is great, the finishing is great, the customer service was top notch! My only criticisms at all is that the box(es) are huge! Beautiful and well done, but massive! The other thing would be the alternate strap. Mine came with a plain black leather, and it's an OK strap. But this being a sport watch, I think a rubber strap of some sort would have been more appropriate. Indeed, I've had a hard time not putting this on almost every day since I got it! ❤❤❤

Shane as usual a balanced and thoughtful review. Damascus steel i have owned in the form of a blade on a pocket knife. The unique character of the steel provides a visual delight for the owner. On this watch it looks awesome and will really catch the sunlight in different ways dependent on time of day. The movement is fine, reliable and easy to adjust. I agree I have never seen a metal bracelet of Damascus steel. The brown calf is the right choice on a sports watch I think. Cant wait to see this watch after a few months of wear.

Damascus has been a popular option in handguns, knives and jewelry for years, so I'm glad to see it making it's way into wristwatches. If you look at the 1 of 1 Cabot Arms matched set of 1911 handguns, made entirely of meteorite, this might be an indication of a future direction for - albeit limited and expensive - watches.

While I think it is an attractive watch, it is a pity that a company like Wise would use the marketing ploy of calling it Damascus Steel. I wasn't interested in their diver because it's high polish on the softer 904 SS. That's a watch that will look great "in the showroom", but will accentuate scratches and swirls very quickly. This is a very unique piece, but very polarizing too. Either you like it or your don't. The quality seems top-notch.
@RelativeTime
Жыл бұрын
That is a concern with 904L. I wonder if anyone has ever put a scratch resistant coating over polished 904L? Maybe that would help.
@bigwilliearmitage
Жыл бұрын
@@RelativeTime I would expect that coating from Rolex or Ball, but I don't believe either of these pricey 904 purveyors does so. IMHO, 904L is a bit of a gimmick. Not sure most would notice the difference in appearance, and the increased corrosion resistance claim is a solution in search of a problem.

It’s a pretty watch - almost despite the Damascus effect. Are you sure it’s real Damascus? I’m far from an expert but that looked more etched than real layered Damascus. I know that effect is very often faked on knives. Either way it’s pretty striking. I like that it’s different and kind of funky. The plane Jane steel version you showed looked awesome. (I’m pretty plane Jane).

Well as some have pointed out, Damascus steel doesn't officially exist anymore.. or rather the technique to make it has been lost to history. So this is whatever the modern equivalent is, using whatever technique Smiths have created to try and recreate it. Instead, they use the most boring looking typeface WISE for me that decision is…unwise. They should of just use the W logo at 12 to replace WISE would of really make it a home run for me. Thanks for the review. I like the watch and the MIYOTA movement choice. I'll take a Miyota 9000 24/7 over the problematic Sellita SW200 with the "helicopter effect rotor. I've had several SW200 crap out on me with the same problem. Instead of fixing the SW200 issues they added the SW300. The SW300 is fine, but so many brands using the SW200 the issue should be fixed. I was told from a watch maker they build them so fast to fill orders they don't lubricate them correctly. Add that to one or two bad parts design = RPITA. The linked video talks about the issue. kzitem.info/news/bejne/loWCzqudfWOXdaQ&ab_channel=SwissWatchCompany
