His AT PLAY IN THE FIELDS OF THE LORD is a true work of art and a great read. Lines so memorable they stick in your head. The opening is a great example of how to render the enveloping action in an image: the moth flying toward the full moon versus the candle as man's striving for the impossible or that which will destroy you. And, oh, the powerful last line in the opening: "For men like himself the ends of the earth had this great allure: that a man is not asked about his past or future but could live as freely as an animal, close to the gut, day by day by day." Not to be excelled, either, is Martin Quarrier's flight over the Andes. So many, many great passages in a carefully crafted visionary work.
