Those numbered spaces are one huge space. That's for making going into the "AVE CAESAR" route up there more costly. Or else it would be the same as going the regular route. The game forces you to go to the longer route once to throw your coin and you need to decide when because everybody else will take the shorter path that round (the numbered ones) :)
@BoardGems
Жыл бұрын
Well, even as two separate spaces it's still shorter than the "pit lane". And what matters as much or more is how many people are entering at the same time, because you could well be delayed while you're in there, while the main track is wide enough you can surely breeze by. I will revisit this now that the Dicetree version is out. The designer has reached out to me, and I will ask him directly. 😊
@BoardGems

Confirmed with the designer! They are considered two separate spaces.

Thanks for the great videos. Do you know how Ave Caesar compares to Ausgebremst?
@BoardGems
2 жыл бұрын
I now have Ausgebremst but have not played it yet! Besides the presentation (which is not an insignificant difference!) I know Ausgebremst has a modular board and a limited way to prepare your deck of cards in advance. A little bit of racing strategy to add to the mix.

What do you feel picks this one out over Flamme Rouge and Downforce? The simplicity? Maybe the shout?
@BoardGems
3 жыл бұрын
Ave Caesar is maybe a tough recommendation to a modern hobbyist because it's so simple. The fun is in the blocking, playing that perfect card that puts you ahead and makes an opponent say unpleasant things about your ancestry. For a more-modern game, Downforce does have some of that, I'm not much of a fan of the special-power cards Restoration added but the underlying game itself is solid. I have Flamme Rouge, but haven't played it!

The passage through the rostrum cannot be direct (fast: in a single move), right? We have to play the right card, save Cesar, and then move on to the next round, is that it? I didn't find anything in the rules saying
@BoardGems
2 жыл бұрын
You must end your movement on one of the spaces in that side track. That's enough, though. Before and after you can go as fast as you want and are able to. Hope that helps!

A question: at the finish line where the yellow stripe, (the division) there counts as 1 square or 2? The rule doesn't say anything about it.
@BoardGems
2 жыл бұрын
Ah, a good question! I have played with a long-time player of Ave Caesar who insisted it should be one long space. I disagree, and in most iterations I've seen, the space(s) on either side of the finish line are of a length typical of a space, indicating it should be two. Besides, you want Ave Caesar to be as brutal as possible, and a longer track helps with that. 🙂 Much later edit: I confirmed with the designer, it is intended to be two spaces, not one.

I've played Giro Galoppo! A fine kids game that adults can enjoy with them too. But I can't picture a group of adults playing the game! The presentation is *very* kid-friendly. And Ave Caesar is already simple enough for kids to play. 🙂

I'm not sure if you follow GMT or their latest P500s, but they have a race game on their called "Charioteer" (with a near-final rulebook posted). I'm wondering if you've seen that and if so what you think about it!

Pre-ordered! I don’t often preorder from GMT because shipping to Canada is so expensive, but I like to support GMT when they develop games outside their usual oeuvre and closer to my tastes. Looks interesting! Simultaneous play is a good design choice for a racing game.

@BoardGems
3 жыл бұрын
Yup, a bit! Flamme Rouge has more of a "game" there, but still keeps thing pretty simple. I expect it's a good alternative. I've tried many games that tried to capture Ave Caesar's fun and simplicity - Formula E was one disappointment in this regard - but Flamme Rouge has the most potential, from what I see. It looks really boring ... What choice do you have per turn ? Go left or right and play 1 card over 3 ... How smart this game ask you to be ... ?
@BoardGems
3 жыл бұрын
There is some very light hand management (deciding which cards to use now versus save for later), and the simple decisions of when to push ahead and when to pit. It's no deep strategy game; it's a quick (20-30 min) and exciting game, full of cheers and groans. I love thinky games. Ave Caesar isn't one, and doesn't claim to be. But I have a big smile on my face the entire time I play, every time I play.
