I just picked up the Dice Tree edition after watching the complete set of your Ave Caesar videos. I was curious to your thoughts on the variants? Do all the versions have as many variants as the Dice Tree edition?

Not officially. Ausgebremst has a few, the others, not so much. For example the attacking variant I think has only appeared in the DiceTree edition, but of course it's possible to back-port that to any version. The way I play Ave Caesar, I add a variant: No exceptions when it comes to passing! By the rules, if the pit lane is blocked you can pass if you want to pit; and if you are in the lead with a hand full of sixes, you must pass. The way I play (not in the rules) is: if you're in the lead with three sixes, you crash! And if the pit lane entrance is blocked, you have to zoom past and potentially be disqualified. But that makes the decision on pitting on the first or second lap very important.

Hi, just found that you posted two newer vids of your fave board game. By any chance, do you know where I can find and or buy the Grow Portuguese version at? I've been interested in this version since you posted your first video 3 years ago. Thanks in advance for any info you may have.

I found it on Amazon Brazil, but I didn’t deliver to Canada. I was fortunate enough to have an employee who was going there on a trip, and she was nice enough to carry it back. I think it was around 40 CAD at the time.

I'll be buying the Dice Tree edition. But I feel a little miffed to be paying so much for a smaller, duller board. I also like the cards best in the original Ravensburger edition. Just keep them light with colourful Roman numerals. What's the need for identical art on all the cards?

Me and you in the same boat. I already ordered their version. If it will be a joy or disappointment - either way, I will also reflect the price in my score... And yes, indeed it should be really awesome game to be worth that (Dice Tree) price.

Hope you enjoy it! (I love racing games, but decided to invest at Heat: Pedal to the metal - as I think it might have more longevity, and after all, Ave Caesar is 1993 design, and while I do have a warm sentiment to nostalgy - The designing world has developed and upgraded a lot since, and keep evolving.. That doesn't necessarily mean that every creation is a better version of the creations it is influenced by or inspired by but... In the case of racing games, I suspect that their evolution does provide better, cooler, and more exciting games than the old ones.. Examples to lay my suspicion on: Death Road: All Stars, Thunder Road: Vendetta, Megapulse, etc..)

It's an interesting topic. I wouldn't say you're wrong regarding game evolution... There is a definite feeling in the hobby that newer is usually better. But newer almost always means more involved, more stuff going on. Maybe not so complicated for a hobby gamer, and maybe the less-involved games of yesteryear are too simple for some modern gamers. Maybe. I will say that for racing games, in my opinion of course, simpler = faster = better. Too many racing games try to be more interesting by having more considerations to think about, and it ends up slowing the game down. Analysis paralysis is annoying at the best of times, but especially during a racing game! It reminds me of my favourite joke to pull in Tales of the Arabian Nights: "Do I want to use my Quick Thinking skill? Well.... hmmm........" 🤔

@@BoardGems 😄 You nailed it with simpler = faster = better, but not sure that = always better. Sometimes you like the race game to be a heavier(ish) experience... but - yes, I understand what you're referring of, and it seems like Ave Caesar as a simple fast racing experience manage to provide quite a perfect experience.

Awesome. What are your thoughts of Ausgebremst? Is it true that they made some tweaks which actually improve the game..?

Well, it depends on what you're looking for. It adds more planning before the race, which from my understanding was intended to address some complaints from reviewers that Ave Caesar was too simple/lucky. I personally never had a problem with that! I'd rather just jump in then spend time counting cards and building draw piles.

@@BoardGems yes, you definitely nailed it with the reason, but with that being said - Would you say that Ave Ceasar is more about the luck of the draw, or more about tactical decisions and a wise management of your hand..?

I don't want to exaggerate the strategy. There are decisions to make, little hand-management and track-position things you can do to improve your odds, but there is also a lot of luck. But I also find saying it's "more about the luck of the draw" can sound reductive, like luck is the only factor that matters. The best games, IMO, have important decisions and also a healthy dose of luck, such that the most-skilled player will win often but not always. When you win a game of Ave Caesar, you feel like your choices were a deciding factor - and when you lose, you feel like you just had some bad luck.

Which version would you recommend someone pick up today?
@BoardGems

This can of course depend on where you are. For English-speaking countries the non-English editions may be hard to find or expensive to import, so I'd only recommend the new Dicetree (also expensive, but you're getting your money's worth on the best version). I can't in all honesty recommend the Pro Ludo (easiest to find used in English) unless you can get it quite cheap. It can still be fun, but just know you're not getting the best Ave Caesar experience. Absolutely nothing wrong IMO with the German, Japanese or Portuguese editions, so if it's easy and cheap to find one of them, go for it!
