I recently did a double imperil century ride using only solid food and hydration salt tabs. I had approximately : 5 Cereal bars (Nature Valley are my preference) 2 wholemeal jam and butter sandwiches 4 bananas 4 chocolate bars A carton and a bit of apple juice This combined with a light breakfast an hour before got me through the whole ride without bonking. That said, i'm a small rider with a fairly low energy intake requirement so you need to find how much you need. Total cost of everything up there for me was around a fiver and I burnt about 6200 kcal.

"Real food" takes time to be processed by our body. So, even when it doesn't end up giving you aches, it's usually not the best source of quick, durable energy. Gels, powders and energy bars designed for endurance athletes have undergone decades of research to achieve a desirable combination of needed macro and micronutrients that do get processed in time by our body during exercise. There's "real food" you can use if properly timed and measured, but the challenges are 1) to adjust to the different quantities of nutrients in the variety of sources available through "real food", and 2) where to carry all that food. Meanwhile, three gel slurps and some scoops of a carb + electrolyte powder in one of your water bottle will effectively power you through a 3 hrs ride without any inconvenience to your body nor to your limited space for items.

This is very interesting. I just have one issue…(newbie cyclist related probably) I can barely take one hand off the bars to indicate and signal hazards to others…nor anywhere near being able to take a drink or food whilst riding. So if I need to eat or drink I have to ask my group to stop…lol. Based on that, fuelling every 15min would turn our 45 miles ride into a 24h challenge 😂. Any advice on how to adjust your body position to keep your balance and control on the bikes whilst taking hands off? Where the most force and pressure is applied…How it affects stability? In any case thanks to Manon and Connor for a great video. Connor is definitely the resident historian at GCN now and always enjoy those history facts on videos! 👍😊
@SeeYouUpTheRoad
3 жыл бұрын
Take a look at your bike fit. If you can’t take your hands off the bars then you have too much weight on your hands. Either your saddle is too far forward or your bars are too high or too close to you or something- you should be able to ride no hands and do anything and everything you need to do including hand signals AND fueling yourself. New riders think they need to be close and compact so they slide their saddles forward bring their handlebars up high and close - it creates a false sense of security. Then the handling is completely compromised especially descending. There should be no weight on your hands all the weight should be on your butt.

My fat stores keep me going successfully for hours... as long as I’m not trying to put out 400w up Bannerdown! All my rides are early morning, so my fuel is just what I ate the day previously until I find a coffee stop. I tried gels years ago and they put me off them. I know they are supposed to be better now, but I much prefer real food. Never had an issue with exercising and eating, but my super long rides are few and far between. Bonking is never great though. Only happened a few times luckily and always been saved by a stash of jelly sweets in the saddle bag stored only on the longer efforts in case there are no shops!

@@disco.lemonade 3hrs of moderate riding is about as long as I can go before I do need to eat something. About 75Km if I'm going harder and there are hills involved. I usually carry 2 large bottles on a longer ride and refill when I stop for food, or before if it is hot. We are all different though and exercising for a couple of hours, early morning is what my body is used to as I used to train for competitive swimming and training was always early morning and late evening.

Or you could just use maltodextrin / table sugar and a set of scales to fill your bottles up with 100g of carbs each. 2:1 M to TS. Cheap as chips and it works great. Add a half teaspoon of pink salt to each bottle too. Oh and a preferred flavouring. Just for reference I do 100K rides with 1600mtrs climbing in around 4 hours 15mins on 2 bottles of above mix (750ml bottles), taking my first gulp around 1 and a half hours into the ride and every ten minutes after. I'll have a pint of water with some sugar in it just before I go out. Sugar is carbs and they are very fast. Especially if you take 2 types like the mix above. I feel as strong at the end as when I first go out. I'm 52, nothing special, just enjoying getting out on longer rides because the fuel makes it possible. Losing the excess pounds too. Win win.

Have you ever thought about using instead of a motorbike an electric motorbike? it would help with the sound to eliminate the engine sound and it is better for the enviroment!!

They had this answered on the tech question segment. They looked into it but the battery life wasn't great. For a 100km ride the rider has to get to / from the location and have enough battery for emergencies. They said battery life isn't there just now but they are keeping an eye on it

In regards to the new UCI rule on forearms on the bars for an aero position, it seems that Connor’s hands are so big that his wrists don’t even touch the bars when riding on the hoods. I think he’s good to go. And you know what they say about guys with big hands…. They need big gloves.

Switched to Keto, bonk-proofed my rides. (I don't race, only long endurance rides)

The cars in the UK seems so respectful. In Sweden they would just push your out in the ditch and speed past.

@@bubblesezblonde I think it's similar in all countries where there is a small to non-existing cycling culture. If I go across the border to Denmark (where everybody cycle everywhere) it's totally different.

I was nervous for Manon when she stopped so close to the road. I favor moving off the road as far as the shoulder will allow.

Fossway the Western frontier?? We have lots of Roman roads in North West wales which is further west than England. 370km? We use miles in Britain.

Best thing to do is load up on a huge stack of pancakes, that always keeps me fueled up for a long ride.

Did a four hour ride yesterday. I did not fuel properly, the lat 20k I was not feeling good, I got some gel in but I waited too long to eat.

My understanding is that glycogen deletion during a long ride is a stimulus for the production of new mitochondria and increased aerobic enzymes. So in one sense I am doubtful that, in the long term, cyclists can really "eat" their way to better performance in training. Enough glucose is essential that the "brain doesn't feel threatened" and shut down the muscles during endurance exercise, however one does not have to stuff oneself with energy gels and energy bars on every ride. I realize that this form of training is very difficult and that careful post-ride nutrition is essential to maintain the immune system. Racing is a different matter and topped up energy stores are important.
