Thank you very much - this video is excellent. Just one thing for anyone trying this at home : the technique of pounding with a hammer on the lower control arm taper at 02:46, in order to loosen it, didn't work for me. I actually damaged the thread of the ball joint, and had a big problem putting the castle nut back on, once the job was done. Next time, I would use a metal wedge to dislodge the lower control arm, taking care not to damage the rubber gaiter. Thats how I ended up breaking the rusty joint open and by then as I said, I'd damaged the thread by hammering. Again, thanks very much indeed for taking the time to make this video. It was very useful and saved me $$$$.

I damaged the thread on my ball joint too! Maybe you could share how you solved that? I figure I can either replace the ball joint or buy a die and try and restore the threads, but the bolt would probably just turn along with the die. New ball joint?

My brother needed a car so I gave him the Civic. I purchased a much less expensive house (that need work) on a couple acres and am working on building a new shop as I get other house projects done. You can be a troll if you want and make fun of me, but I think I did fine and I helped a bunch of people with the video - even if I called it the wrong body style and what not. The inner CV joint slipped out of the transaxle case. When one axle slips out the other does not get power to it. Evidently, you didn't push it in completely. It should "click" in and you should test it by lightly pulling or prying out on the inner joint to make sure it is clicked in. In rare cases you might have gotten the wrong axle. When you compare the new with the old, make sure the snap ring is in the same position as the old one or it won't click in properly.

Thanks for the video it was enlightening. Cool how you didn't have to mess with the brakes to change the shaft. So the shaft just wedges in the transmission but doesn't bolt down at that end? Interesting how that works out. What was wrong with the shaft anyway? Bearings? By the way, I see you used Castrol transmission fluid. I hope that doesn't come to bite you later. Genuine fluid especially with the Honda automatics is important, not sure how important it is with the manuals.

I followed this video, and made sense, and worked well. A day or so later I'm getting a small drip from the point where the CV inserts to the tranny itself. I can see a small gap, but no apparent way to close said gap. I've seen other videos, and in some there is a gasket/seal between the axle and the transmission. I really followed along to the methods you used to place the axle in, using the axle itself to slug the head to the transmission. I didn't have a torque wrench that I could put the 1.25" socket on to tighten the main nut back to the axle(at the wheel side). Do you think that might be it?
@builditgarage
10 жыл бұрын
On the transmission side of the axle there is a retaining ring that should hold the axle into the differential. The axle nut on the outside holds the shaft into the hub and puts the proper tension on the bearings so they don't wobble and fail. You should make sure you have that torqued properly. There is a seal on the transmission that seals to the axle. If there is a gap in there you might not have gotten the axle all the way seated into the differential. You will probably have to take it back apart to get it to go in farther. If you pound on the boot to try to get it in farther you will probably put a hole in it. At about 3:25 in the video you can see the clip on the axle I am removing. Somewhere around 6:10 I stick my finger in to feel how close it is. You shouldn't be able to get your finger in to the gasket. You shouldn't really be able to see the gasket. If you can see a gap you did not get it in all the way. If you watch the inner CV in the video you can see it move inward as I bump it.

Hey so what if I already removed the trans and motor? I watched your other video on removing the trans before. Now I have a empty bay and just the axles hanging. Do I put it back down with wheels and then pull? Do I have to remove the axle nut on the rotor? Any tips or advice would help. Love your videos btw
@builditgarage
7 жыл бұрын
Ben hoover - not sure what you mean by "put it back down and then pull". The axles hold the wheel bearings together so if you move it around to much they might come apart. You could tie the axles up so they can spin without flopping around. Yes, if you want to remove the axle you have to take off the large nut in the middle of the rotor. then the axles will just slide out. it will be fine moving it around in the yard with out the axles. Just if you are going to pull it down the road it could be bad.

One thing I might suggest is to check the oil seal where the axle goes into the transaxle. If it shows signs of leaking, you should replace it. If the car has high mileage (over 100,000), you probably should replace it anyway.

It could. Examine the splines at the inner end of the axle where it goes into the transaxle. See if there is any damage. You would expect to find similar damage to the splines inside the transaxle but it would be harder to see. If you are lucky, all you might have to do is reinstall the end correctly (after cleaning out any debris).
