『代表的日本人』より NINOMIYA SONTOK A Peasant Saint 二宮尊徳 農民聖者 “Only the ‘art of love’ (仁術) can restore peace and wealth to these poor people...Money will not help them. In fact, we should stop giving them money, because it leads to greed, laziness, and arguments among the people. The wilderness must be improved by its own resources, and the poor must help themselves...If we use love, hard work, and self-reliance, I think we can bring these villages back to wealth in about ten years.” Sontok believed that no district was healthy until it had enough resources to last ten years of scarcity...His advice was always so simple, so cheap, and so sincere. First, he concentrated on one village ― usually the poorest in the district ― and converted it to his ways. This was usually the hardest part. But, with one village rescued, he had a base to start converting the whole district. The peasants who learned from him were required to help their neighbors, just as they were helped by their teacher. With this good example, and with help freely given by men who had lived through similar difficulties, the whole district would eventually adopt his teachings. “The method that can rescue a village can rescue the whole country; the principle is just the same,” Sontok used to say. “Let's devote ourselves to this one piece of work, and our example may save the whole nation.”
