One quick note from experience. When using the 1/8" foam as a sit pad it is easy for it to pick up pine needles, thorns, and other sharpies from the ground that will stay lodged in the foam. This happened with both my pad from Gossamer Gear and the one from MLD. If you then use that pad to put under your air mattress, it can actually INCREASE the chance of a puncture. A trick to help with this is to mark one side of the foam pad (with a Sharpie) so that you always put the same side toward the ground and the other side stays basically pricker free. You would then, of course, keep one side "clean" and position that side against your air mattress. Some of the thorns can still occasionally work through to the clean side, but they are less common and less dangerous. I loved this system as it gave me a warmer pad at night and a nice place to rest during the day. The extra ground protection and warmth even has me thinking I could maybe switch to an Uberlite pad for more weight savings in milder weather.

Love the windscreen idea! I cold soaked last year on the CT but still use a stove too. Also, appreciated the insights around the 900 ml pot. Personally, I use a 3'x3' tyek sheet, along with the sit pad like you formerly used. I used a large perm marker to write "Hiker to Trail" and "Hiker to Town" on the blank side. Not my original idea, but it really worked in hitching a ride last year. The piece also serves as my welcome mat and is great for laying things on it to ensure nothing is lost or left behind from camp or breaks. I carry a plastic shopping bag to put my shoes in at night for safe storage inside my tent. Another hack I gleaned from someone else. Works great! Looking forward to your 2023 adventures.

I wore Altra lone peak 6 shoes for several years, and loved them. But the company changed something last year in the design, not sure what, and the last pair gave me terrible Plantar Fasciitis. They never fit right. I tried several other brands (Topas, Sauconys, Oboz), but ended up with the Lone Peak All Weather Mid, Normally I don't like mid-high shoes, but these have been awesome: best shoes bar none I've ever worn for comfort, lightness and sturdiness. As for windscreens: it's amazing how much gas you'll save using one. I love how you made one. I bought mine at REI 25 years ago.

Hi Jon, excellent video! The windscreen is fantastic idea! For 2023 the addition to my UL gear is a personal bidet. I purchased the Uyicoo portable bidet on amazon along with the Hydrapack 500 ml flex bottle. For me it's a game changer and I won't need to pack out my TP on the John Muir Trail this August. Thank you again for video on how to apply for the JMT permit process! Happy Trails! 🙂

Hell yes on the Nike hate - Such arrogance that even among the top brands in footwear, somehow Nike seems to put themselves above everyone and charge about 10 % more in spite of the fact that we all know they're made by the cheapest labor on the planet. Too many other choices.

The MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe is equally good in the wind as the Soto Windmaster but I still plan to make a windscreen much like yours. The taped on straw piece to make a sleeve for the stake is a great idea. I’ll use that with a couple of Shepard hook stakes to secure mine. I have used a sit pad as my windscreen but you have to watch it or it will end up in the flame if the wind blows it over.

Since you're already using Asics runner, have you tried the Gel-Trabuco and Trabuco Max shoes. They really felt good for my feet when I got planar fasciatis. Also, I used to carry a similar sit pad like the 1/8in foam, and I moved away from it to a z seat like one, but I tend to use a piece of cut semi permiable roofing membrane as a ground cloth, and I use it for stretching and quick laying down while walking. And it helps that i has some 0.5-1 R value which is placed under the whole tent.

I would say the only downside to the 1/8" pad is that it tends to pick up tiny broken pine needles that orient in the perfect position to pop your air pad. You have to be careful to remove this stuff when you roll it up.

I also switched to the Terraventure 3s and my feet do so much better than in my previous shoes that had a taller stack height and steeper drop. I'm planning to buy a few pairs of them because I am afraid that like so many other shoes, future updates may not work as well for me. I'm with you on using a groundsheet, I always do even if it is extra weight. I consider it protection for my air pad as much as my floor. I also like laying it out when taking breaks to protect from thorns, ants, chiggers, etc

@jonallenoutside they seem to be really catching on but what I think would happen is other companies would try to imitate what they are doing so well to compete better. Who knows, maybe Altra will start making their shoes so that they don't completely fall apart after a couple hundred miles 🤣

Jon nobody likes a quitter....I'm trying to get my beloved Zseat back into my kit while your quitting on it. I also discovered the 1/8" pad and it is ALL that. I think you'll find like I did however that its better in camp than it is on the trail. It doesn't slip into and out of the pocket very easily. Its a bit awkward , bulky, and "sticks" to everything. My solution has been to take 2 pads but I had trouble with that because the second one was the back panel for my pack (GG G420) but that wasn't very convenient to pull out on the trail either. Switching them didn't work well because the rolled pad would get wonky as a back panel. Enter the new GG sit pad with built in folds rather than a roll. It will fold up perfectly to become the back panel and leave me with my trusty Zseat in the pocket for trail use. Boom When you started with the wind screen I was "not needed, use a rock" until you showed your stake hack....holy crap thats a brilliant idea and finally a use for Sheppard hooks. It can be smaller and lighter and fit flat up against the wall of my bear can and will stay where I stake it out...Mic drop. very nice tip, thanks.

I met quite a few triple crowners on the Arizona Trail this spring and many of them are using the full-size Therm-a-rest foam pads for sleeping and have dumped their inflatable sleeping pad. The foam one won't pop, saves time and is wonderful for those mid-day breaks. I'll try sleeping on the Therm-a-rest foam pad and if it works then that will take over for both the Z-seat and the 1/8" foam pad.
