This just blew my mind! My machine can adjust reverse stitch length but it's never quite perfect, especially the tension in reverse... Can't wait to try this!

Great technique. When possible, I just lower the needle, spin the work 180°, and sew carefully to hit the same holes. I haven’t found the reverse spacing to be consistent, so I don’t use reverse much.

Wow never knew that. My vintage machine doesn’t have the same spacing in reverse so this will help. Thank you

I have been having backstitching problem with my Leatherwork. The spacing between holes changes as the material changes. Very frustrating. I tried this technique and worked great.

I am new to sewing with a machine and every time I try to backstitch the top side looks great but the bottom side looks terrible. I’ve checked my tension and everything is fine for forward sewing but as soon as I go in reverse it bunches at the bottom. I tried this technique and I’m still having the issue. What am I doing wrong?

Carrie I used to have the same problem, this is what worked for me. First off I have a LS-1, and I was trying to back stitch by just pulling the handle down regardless of where the needle was and that would give me a birds nest (bad too! Having to remove the bobbin bad). I have to wait until the needle is almost at "top dead center" and then I can do reverse stitches. The way I learned where the proper position is 2 ways, when sewing very slowly listen for a click when the needle almost finished at its top stroke or when using your wheel, advance the needle upwards and it should give you a bit of mechanical resistance and then there's the click I mentioned and the resistance is gone. One more point of reference is the needle will be in the same position where when your done sewing and you want to pull your item out and there is no tension as you remove your item. When at that position I can reverse stitch with no problem. When done reversing I do the same thing (ensure needle is almost at top and the machine clicked) and I then sew forward. I also pull slightly in the reverse direction as the machine doesn't seem to have as much oomph in reverse and and I can have stitches stack up, plus I use the leather knurled or smooth feet due to my leather. I was so frustrated with my machine I tried everything timing it, polishing, tension screws etc. (I bought my machine second hand so I didn't really know how much "help" the previous owner had done) I went through every troubleshooting video SR had and the info I was looking for was in one of the basic setup videos, where the host mentions a few times about waiting for the needle to be almost to the top. I also would occasionally forget to lower my presser foot which will cause similar issues. I really hope I made an inkling of sense and this helps! Have a great day! Good luck! Charlie

For the love of god all the people that say his/her machines don’t backtack perfectly. Have your machine serviced. It will work flawlessly if timed and adjusted properly. Also a quality machine is also an issue. Don’t buy knock off machines
