As a long-time Roland fan and collector, I initially scoffed at the Behringer clones, but at less than the cost of dinner and a movie, how can one go wrong? I grabbed the TB-3 and RD-6, copies of two machines I don't have and cannot afford, and was not disappointed. They really capture the spirit and sound of the original instruments. So much so that I also bought the more pricey VC-340 Vocoder. Haters can hate all they want, but Roland had ample opportunities to re-release their vintage instruments and chose to go another direction. (...expensive, crappy miniature digital copies) Behringer simply identified and filled a niche.

Totally agree. Although I can understand Roland's position to some extent. They are a hight-tech company that have sunk a lot of resources in to research and development. They must believe that their modern digital technology is far superior to what they turned out four decades ago. It is a bit like asking a car manufacturer to re-release a 1982 model. Yes, there are factories in India and Brazil still turning out cars based on 1970's models for the domestic market, but that is not something WV and Rover wants to associate with. Question is, Could Roland have re-released their classic instruments, fully analog, at a competitive price and meet their own quality standards? And would that even be a smart business strategy for them as a company? I own a few behringers. They are great, being what they are: quite archaic retro-instruments. I also own a tr-8 and a tb-3, both of wich I find really well-made, well thought out products.

I'm pretty convinced that if the Boog was made by Moog and had $1000 added to the price people would be all over themselves about how amazing the device is. But because it has Behringer's name on it, "it sounds stiff", or "they didn't quite nail it" when you can't even match two real Model D's to sound like each other due to age, tuning, how long the device has been on etc.The Boog sounds great and is affordable to for pretty much everyone in actual hardware form instead of some VST. Can't everyone just be happy about that?
@AudioPilz

@Madrrrrrrrrrrr

Moog already has synths that do most of these sounds and lower in price but a cheap 100% clone would destroy their own minimoog market. Anyway most synth buyers prefer cheapness over sound every day. That's why this show is called bad gear. Also the fact 2 old mini's don't sound the same doesn't prove anything. Yes that analog is unstable but that doesn't say anything about comparing boog to a real mini. You really have to listen to a real one to be able to compare them. And the internet is full of dumb synth owners who compare apples with oranges without ever having played the real deal. On osc level comparing the sound maybe samish but that vanishes once you search for their edges. All behringer synths have a behringer sound. Even the boog.

Yep. An original Moog is like a piece of furniture. A boutique made device and "looks the part". I use a Poly D, which adds a few simple, yet surprisingly effective extensions to the Model D's architecture and it is the one synth that I have almost always plugged in and ready for playing. Also, my few months old toddler absolutely loves it for some reason. If I may offer a few tips. There is a PWM of sorts - the 3rd oscillator offers an inverted sawtooth wave, which is primarily for LFO duties, but if you layer it with a saw in the second oscillator, you get a PWM-like with detune controlling the rate. It's not perfect, because it changes rate with pitch, but it's there. Another, more obvious, so maybe you've used it, trick with the 3rd oscillator is setting it as the modulator and leaving oscillator control on, which gets you FM and AM sounds controllable from your modwheel. BTW. as a slightly educated electronic I'll pedantically add, that the Moog filter implements voltage control using the, normally unwanted, effect of virtual resistance on the emitter electrode of a bipolar transistor. I haven't checked, but I suspect that trick may be used in few other places in this synth. This is very smart, but wrong as far as traditional rules of circuit design go, since that parameter is dependent on transistor's beta. Which despite being the supposedly most important parameter of a transistor, is a wildly unreliable parameter, that can differ by a factor of a 100 between two transistors of the exact same model and changes significantly with the temperature of the transistor. You can partially reign in that instability if you are building the circuit as an IC, but that type of circuit built out of discrete elements will inevitably be unstable to some degree. So when you say it's a bit unstable, like the original - yes, that's the nature of that beast :D

Oh weird- the initial walkthrough of sounds was making my nipples explode with delight at apparent phatness- but the jams just sounded... bad. This is the opposite of the normal Bad Gear effect, where you can take any apparently hopeless device and find something downright banging to do with it. I actually felt a bit queasy listening to it and was telling myself that it was something to do with weird pitch instability or something, but I do wonder if the same would have happened if I listened to those clips without knowing that they were the fruit of Papa Uli's loins. I do own a little bit of B - the 303 and 606 clones, and while I feel a little guilty, they're fine machines. It feels like anything more complex than that becomes too much and the cut corners too apparent. I also used to have a Neutron and, well, it was crap. Wobbly pots, leaky VCAs, noise, prone to stuck notes and so forth. I replaced it with an Erebus v3 (admittedly at roughly twice the price) and was blown away... Actually.. hey, Florian, how about a Bad Gear episode about Erebus v3? It's a really interesting little paraphonic desktop unit with a giant sound :)

I don't like Ulli himself (pls don't sue I spent all my money on cables), I do like the fact that he's enabling a lot of people to get into music with a low barrier to entry. I initially never got into synths or guitar pedals because they were EXPENSIVE for someone who just wants to mess around. I bought my minilogue xd used for 400 euros which wasn't cheap. I can never afford a real Moog or Roland but I know I can just get a Behringer and see if it's even something that I would like. The biggest issue with a lot of Behringer stuff is construction quality. Knobs and sliders never feel responsive or tactile and usually just feel cheap overall. Unpopular opinion, but a lot of gear is just overpriced for most normal people.

Just a reminder for a eletarist techno (and synth) guys who think that you need to buy only original vintage analog gear. Don't forget, that most of classic 90s techno-trance tunes, were made on the gear that was really cheap or depending on time appeared to be shit, in 90s everyone wanted digital synths with multitimbral patches, layering, maybe some drums tracks like M1 or JV's, lol. He was hoping to sell his old Prophet 6, but concluded the core sound of the P6 was better. I'd say he had unrealistic expectations anyway, because the P6 costs €/$1000 more than the Polybrute with less keys and far less features. Yesterday I bought a Prophet 5 and now I understand what he meant when he says the core sound of the Prophets is better. The Prophet 5 is even more expensive than the 6, has even less features and at its core sounds even better imo. I still prefer the Polybrute though. You get a lot more for your money. I like what complex sounds it can make. Arturia really excels in their software and firmware support and updates. They are really generous with free presets and loyalty discounts on their other products and such. You could also do an episode about the Prophet 600. That one doesn't have a great reputation for a Prophet. Behringer was supposed to make a clone of it (the pro-800), but it got delayed of course. Sorry for the long winded comment. I'm supposed to make music, but with all of my gear expectations are just so high I can't live up to them so I'm procrastinating. See you next year!

Berhinger is like McDonald's, it's impossible to avoid becasue of price and avaiability (I have a Neutron & 2 small Xenyx 502's (you can put them anywhere for utility). Behringer gear can be deeply satisfing the same way a "Royale with Cheese" (that's a Quarter Pounder for the American viewers who never saw Pulp Fiction) when you're desperatly hungry and low on cash and optiions. The model D sounds like a Moog, although at time brittle when pushed. Not as smooth, warm, and in your face or tear you head off like a real Moog.

I really enjoy EVERY episode, compliment! I have a suggestion for a bad-gear-device: The Roland D50... Used it several years, also live, but at a certain point, i was so sick about that device. So far I have owned few of behringer synths and one mixing desk and compared to other brands I have to say I wouldn’t hesitate to buy anything behringer now;) 10 ch mixing desk from behringer have very solid pots without wobble where 10ch yamaha mixer with 4x b mix value was feeling quiet cheap with its wobbly pots. Synth wise all behringer does is allow people like me to have some really great sounding analog gear I would never be able to own in my life if there wasn’t Uli. So all the people basically saying “no you shouldn’t have it because it’s copy” can go literally fuck them selfs while I’ll enjoy making music;) Model D sound epic and for its price it’s just silly not to try it😎

I'm too cheap, even for Uli's spawn - I bought the Akai MPC One's "Mini-D" plugin, I'm off on four bar loops and not looking back. The experience of having toyed with a Neutron for a few months does make the software synthesizer easier to understand, but seriously - 49€ and presets ? It doesn't get any more accessible and my worldwide audience of ten people won't ever tell the difference !

I have a Behringer Poly D, and for some reason it sounds pretty different from what I'd expect, too much tone in the mid-range
@JackBobsonOfficial
Жыл бұрын
Lmao I made you buy it 🤣
@AudioPilz
Жыл бұрын
Yeah, these synths have quite a few mids
@sibbyeskie
Жыл бұрын
I have both and you're exactly right. The Poly has more low-mid range. The Model D extends the bass better, but what it really does better is create a natural compression in the mixer gain. This is how the minimoog also sounded. If you look at a Minimoog waveform it's basically a solid block whereas the Poly D has phase peaks. This means the bass sort of "floats" around. The Model D bass tone remains even and massive. For reference, if I gain all OSC's on the Poly D to max 10, there is only subtle harmonic distortion and sine-type curving of the waveform. But my Model D OSC's at only 3 or so start to curve and distort even more than the Poly. At 10, they practically all smoosh into a giant square type tone. And that's all before you can even kick in the overload. To me they are considerably different synths and I like them equally but for different reasons.

I am a Behringer fan girl. They allow me to have things I otherwise wouldn't be able to get. The Wasp Deluxe is fantastic. I also have the TD-3 and RD-6. I really want their Solina String Ensemble clone. I also really want the RD-9, RD-8, and TD-3-MO. And plenty of other stuff. People can give them crap for making clones. But their clones allow poor people like me to get a taste of classic gear. If Roland doesn't want to get ripped off by Behringer they should make better clones than Behringer.

I had 1, sold it, sold 2 Mother 32s too, build quality of Model D was bad, I mean the wood was like cardboard, soft and easy to damage. Sound wise, it was nothing like my M32s and the knobs were woeful. I experimented in semi modular and decided it was not for me. Hands down the 1 OSC of a M32 would run rings around the Model derp. The feel of the M32 was much smoother in the knobs, classic toggle switches, shame about the hidden features for the sequencer etc. Model Derp has a place in the market, I prefer to get better gear that I will end up using. Anyways thx for all the great bad gear this year and have a beer for the new year!!!
