Thanks man! I absolutely love this thing. When I got mine last year, I dusted off 1 of my XP computers, linked it to an Evolution 16 and let the plug and play auto-setup connect it to those tiny slider JD-08 parameters with some turny knobs on the Evolution 16. I really like those 4 buttons that let you turn the 4 wave synths on and off live! ALL the original presets are there, plus more, plus you can build your own sounds. IT's way better than the Korg Radius, which operates in a similar way! You can also record each of the 4 wave setups separately in your DAW and mix from there with your mouse, but it ain't the same as pressing those 4 little buttons live!

You can simulate drum kits by creating drum sounds on each layer and assigning them to key ranges. Then you essentially have a 4 track drum synth on one part. You can use the same method with melodic synth parts. Different sounds on different layers and assigned to key ranges. It's a little tedious but you could have up to 8 parts going at once in one sequence.

I don't really understand why people hate so much on the boutique series. Yes, they have some rather stupid limitations implemented that Roland just put there to not give us everything the original has to offer (even though we can't buy the real fullsize versions of the synths and drum machines since they went out of production 30+ years ago) and they have crammed in too many sliders to fit in that form factor resulting in ant-man sized sliders. But the sound you get from those machines gives me a semi-hardon. And with a couple Behringer BCR2000 you have enough big knobs to control everything without tweezers. If I had enough spending money I'd do a pokémon and catch them all. But unfortunately they are way too expensive so for that to happen they would need to be at least 50% off since my last name isn't Bezos. I mean, you can fit them all on one small desk. Couldn't even fit half of the original synths in my studio. ❤
@AudioPilz

Nah, but they made a midi controller series that is discontinued now. BCR2000 and BCF2000. BCR has 32 encoders and 16 buttons and BCF has 8 motorized faders. Both are awesome to control much midi things. I used mine instead of the PG200 that I was missing for my JX3P. So perfect for the boutique series when you can have loads of addressable normal sized midi knobs. 😘

I also own a JD-08 (less than a year old). Once you turn off some of the Tone layers, you find some pretty decent vintage pad sounds. I might roll off some of the high end in an EQ, but this unit is quite powerful in crafting sounds. It does not have to be just for 90s throwback raves.
@mrz80

"...it just sounds so good." True dat. I just picked one up for $not_bad to give our church's keyboardist some more sonic breadth and depth for layering to pair with our new stage piano. Hey, the combo was way cheaper than a Fantom :D [edit - our keyboardist is pretty content with the sounds already in the keyboard (SL Numa Piano - some really nice tones there) so I kept the JD. After a while I decided it really wasn't gelling with me and I sold it. I've not had seller's remorse this bad in decades! I'm currently seeing JDs on reverb for less than I made selling mine so I'm thinking "cool, get another one and STILL come out ahead!"]

Another thing not mentioned here, is that the multi-effects included in the JD-800 weren't recreated properly either. The JD-800's chorus for example has a particular sound and didn't hold up well to being mono'd at all. So if a patch relied on some quirk of the old FX engine it breaks down. Secondly, I'm baffled as to why they didn't include the JD-990's waveforms at the very least. The JV-1080 plugin is basically just the XV-5080 plugin with different patches but the exact same waveforms. That's most likely due to the fact that it was a sloppy paste job from the Integra 7 than an effort to accurately recreate it like Korg did with all of their romplers/digital synths. If I had to guess the JD-800 plugin and the JD-08 is just a further gutted version of the JV-1080 plugin since the 1080 plugin also has the same filter issue, FX issues, and has all the JD-800 waveforms already in it. Not to mention the JV-1080 also has some of the JD-990 waveforms already in there which makes their absence from the boutique and the plugin even more confusing.

The density and layering of the comedy gold in these videos is just too good. Like Arrested Development tier layering. I can watch them all at least twice and keep finding more gold.

The truth is, just the sequencer on this tiny synth, plus a Boss RC-505, is enough to pound out synthwave bangers all day. Add a KP3, and you're ready to go on tour! Great show. :)

Ive been getting into these small boutique synths because i link them up with my mpc one! Honestly id love the bigger stuff but making my studio work in my small ass apartment is hard enough! The berhinger desktop series and roland boutique have been saviors for me

1:28 this synth the jd-800 is giving me flashbacks of 90s drums and bass albums, russian pop and raves (this synth would be useful in my opinion).

When you're not making me miss the gear that I've let go over the years, you're making me seriously consider new gear that I really don't want or need but sounds so good in your jams that it just might fit into my synth rig. Also, did I just see a touch of 2001 slit scan flash by in the kitschwave? I'm sorry, Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.

I used to hate synths like M1 D-50 roland JV stuff and so on. But now I have changed my mind. After 20 years. Hahaha. This is the new retro.

I got the JD 08 almost a month ago. I was in love with the expectations i had for it, only to be let down. It sucks. Im ready to give it away to someone who doesnt know anything about the JD 800, or anything about synths at all in general. Maybe it'll get the attention it thinks it deserves. Edit. I am really trying hard to like it. But the more i use it, i realize i hate it, and maybe someone else can make better use of it.

I have super crappy old Mackies with an 8" driver for checking the bass and Yamaha HS-50 for normal mixing. I check sibilance with a single JBL Control 1.

I love the way it sounds. It's the perfect Vaporwave synth. Also have you tried powering your Boutiques from a USB power bank? That might help with the noise.

I couldn't any more mad at Roland after watching this video. The JD-800 has always been a dream synth, thanks Roland for once again destroying my dreams. That being said, I sold a JD-XA because it turns out all of those knobs, faders and buttons can be ruined by a horrible tiny LCD and a manual so infuriating that it makes you want to sell all your gear and buy a didgeridoo and spend the rest of your life on a hippy compound tying to fit into the drum circle. I digress. I do have a MC-505 that I'm still very happy with and a new MC-707 that is a dream to use, both sound great and are a huge value. And now we're back to square one, Roland destroyer of dreams and yet at the same time your oldest best friend.
