I've disabled the motorized faders on mine and use the faders manually, which is an option not mentioned here. I seldom remember that the faders are motorized, just like I forget that there's a Dimension Beam on board, since I use neither. Consequently, I've never seen them as weak points. If you put the time and effort in, you can get amazing results with these units. Great episode.

There's only one Roland groovebox that remains to cover. The holy grail of Roland groovebox Bad Gear: The Roland MV-8000. It's either "bad gear finally good" or "good gear gone bad". Either way, I have faith that you can handle it, Florian!

The MV 8000 wasnt a groovebox, it was a full-on music production station for serious producers. It was directly aimed at the MPC and did very well. It was hardly "bad gear" and anyone who say it was obviously were inexperienced. That is one piece of pro studio gear that doesn't belong on this show..
@mc2engineeringprof

@@TK-hz4ss I think the takeaway is that "anything can be good gear in the right hands and with the right use case". The MV-8000 is no better a piece of gear than the Nord Lead 2, the Roland System - 1, the OP-1, the AN1x, the X-Station, or countless other pieces he's reviewed. I love mine, but the thing takes forever to boot and load samples, the memory is paltry (even when upgraded), the screen miniscule (you need the VGA/mouse adapter, really), the .mvo patch format is obscure, the onboard synth is pretty pathetic, the effects are limited, the IO isn't great, there's no ADAT, who needs turntable / phono jacks?, there's lots of menu diving, etc, etc. I still love it, but there's plenty of reasons that it's "bad" in some people's eyes. I think Florian will love it, though, and I can't wait to see what he could do with it. I think he'll be shocked.
@CrackoWitcho

I have one and I love it, except that the D-Beam never fully disables and leaves a squeal in everything, using it with headphones drives me nuts. Very fair video, I'd have just added a few things: It was kinda bad that the 8 motorized faders had to be shared by four rows of parameters, but that they ALSO had to do double duty having the 1-8 & 9-16 mode (like on 909) just made that system completely untenable for me. Many complaints of ppl hearing artifacts of moving faders in the analog audio output, too. Moreover, the "throw" or length of the faders was so short that I never felt like I could get any reasonable amount of control over the parameters I was trying to manipulate.

I used to have one of these. It was hard to get into without the editor, which didn’t work well. The faders use was not ideal. But I remember it sounding very good! The arpeggiator was great, and the drum kits were very punchy. It was NOT a dumbed down MC909, this is a common misconception due to the lack of surface conteol and smaller screen, but in fact it was more capable and it sounded much better, like light years ahead. It was the grandfather of Overbrigde, but people didn’t get then. Had it not been abandoned by Roland’s support, I might still have it.

Ahhh, yes...this takes me back. It was the late 90s, and I'd been sent this thing's great-grandpa for review, ie: the MC-303. Roland was billing it as something of a "studio necessity" for techno producers, because...303! But it wasn't the unprogrammability of patches, the ROMful of styles that were guaranteed to be played-out by the time it shipped, the nearly-absent and quite pointless user memory, and so on. No, it was a little something where, having given up totally on trying to get it to behave well in various studio configurations, I opted to treat the thing like I would if I were using it live(ish). Got a decent groove going, but when I slap-pounced on some extra thing (I forgot what...and you'll note why) that I had to access via the "keyboard", wellllllllll... The key did this beautiful arc as it flew off whatever Roland thought was acceptable as this thing's "keybed" and landed a few feet away. After getting over the flying interface component incident, I looked into the keybed through the new "hole"...and wow, was this under-engineered. The keybed certainly wasn't some hi-tweak Fatar or such, but more resembled something made by Hasbro. Plastic crap, cheap parts, etc. Put it together with everything else the MC-303 had to offer (or rather, didn't _have_ to offer), and...well, there was no review. But what was truly astonishing was that Roland more or less doubled-down on this little electronic abomination and gave us many more configurations of varying utility. Some worked (SP-404, for example) but most...uh...well, didn't. Either you got "crippleware" with unchangeable patterns, patches, etc...or Roland tried to cram everything into them as if they'd opened some sonic equivalent of a Vegas buffet (like this thing!). But Roland stuck to their word and NEVER released a reissue of the original TB-303 (which is what everyone wanted them to do). Either you got the MCraps (the subject here being a prime example) or their "boutique" reissues with the slightly janky-sounding ACB engine, or the overengineered-for-appearances Aira nonsense. But they never swerved in their mission to make sure that NO new 'n' true TB-303 would ever come out of their plants. +1 for keeping their word...but -1,000,000 for issuing all of the neo-X0X junk.

I used to have this unit. It is essentially a Roland Fantom in a Groovebox with only the motorized faders and crappy LCD as the major difference. The sampling is actually upgradeable to 1GB single PC133 SDRAM module which were hard to find when I bought mine but now seem to be both available and cheap! But yes, load times for just 128mb worth of samples is 22 minutes!!!! For the price, I prefer to buy the Fantom X 61 note with version 2.10 audio software.. But if I found this for $250 I would buy it!

filters could be better,many things in this beauty could be fixed, like editing more parameters without computer for example ,filter selection for rythm patches,auto divide improvement etc...,still you can do A LOT via sysex from external midi controller,also remember that you can switch off motors in faders...NOW if you consider 128 voices! with 512mb ram!, decent pleasurable sound character as for digital machine ,amazing arpegiator,and sequencer accuracy of 909 this machine is a hidden gem,and in my opinion mc 707 is based on this design,shame that Roland droped os dev for it(as many companys do) ,it could be amazing if Roland would work with users in tandem,still it could be worse(akai mpc 5000-maybe material for next episode???),good review as always,keep it up,bests

Lovely patina on those rubber pads and keys on the midi keyboard :P I recent got hold of a MC 101 groovebox. Sadly roland has not got ridden of the software dependency if you want to deep edit the sounds. And to make matters worse, it requires a payed subscription to their cloud service to get acces to the editor. So it seems they have gotten backwards in some regards on their newer grooveboxes.

I'm a huge fan of the MC-909, but never tried the 808. Interesting that here it very much sounds like the 808 is a repackaged 909 with a stripped-down interface. I guess both are derived from the Fantom-S workstation/XV line. I'm definitely recognising the preset sounds in that last jam! By the way... I'll be simultaneously offended and excited if you ever feature the 909! :D

Where is the warehouse with the 80's displays? Next to the gigantic D-Beam warehouse! I've had a hunch for years they thought it was the next big thing, made millions of them, and now have to shoehorn them into anything.

OK. That Roland rompler platform is becoming a bit of a central theme and you / we have already mentioned the often somewhat tinny sound but I am actually impressed by this one. 44.1 Khz uncompressed is still good enough for me.Having worked with Roland W30 for years, (30 Khz, 12 bits 1,44 MB ram) looking through tiny displays had become second nature anyway. I'd say this is a sort of super W30 without it's biggest disadvantages. And I love motorized faders. These could very well be the same ones as used on my faithful VS-2480 multitracker. They hold well but need some cleaning now and then and that menas going inside. The integration with software editors I do not hold against the MC808, providing they are indeed still available and working flawlessly. That's more or less another similarity to the VS2480, although that one has all the software built in and you only need a mouse, keyboard! Assuming that it still works as a cross between a conventional Midi sequencer and a groovebox (Does it actually have editbale MIDI tracks? I am not so pattern repetition oriented.) it might actually be the best of both worlds if you dig the workflow. Is that full automated fader mixdown I see happening? I still prefer dedicated hardware solutions over DAW's and a combination of the VS2480 and the MC808 would still be a great setup today as far as I am concerned, providing you also own a good midi-controller/keyboard. And it still looks GROOVY as well. Me like it big time!

@@AudioPilz Yep: It was the about the first reasonably affordable, real world, all in one baox Fairlight alternative! An aditional question: Can you confirm if the MC808 sequencr also records poly AT? I now use 8 tracks of a Kawai Q80 for that at once. If the 808 can do that on one track I am REALLY tempted. That would make real time recordings with poly AT, to which I am addicted, a lot easier to edit. :-)

I love this machine. I use a cleaner/lubricant bought from a music store to keep the motorized faders in good shape, but the option to disable the motorized faders is there too. It’s Best using the MC-808 with an old tablet running Windows 7 or 10. *Side note - I once downloaded a template from a Propellerheads Reason Video from James Bernard “Automation Toolbox” on youtube, and Sent the automated Midi messages from the 8 band eq off the.. vocoder I think.. to the motorized faders on the MC-808. It looked Glorious 😵💫
