Nickel anti-seize brushed on those splines and the yolk comes off easy every time and no, it doesn't come loose or work loose.

Why not copper kote? It's far more superior, they use it on the oil refineries, my dad was a pipe fitter and stage rigger.

one of the main reasons for this happening is the nut was too loose to begin with, and as it wears it just lets more and more water and dirt in and centrifugal force just grinds it all out

Honestly it’s probabaly work I mean it’s like shimming the yoke on a diff on an old Chevy truck. Long as it’s right it works fine. I got lowes washers in my dads 9 years going strong.

if you run a bead of weld parallel to the splines , on the outside of the yoke , it will cause the yoke to tighten up on the spline , as the weld cools and contacts . ... sometimes parts aren't available when you need them

@@frankarchuleta5427 Your welds maybe. The splined end is welded to the end of a drive shaft. A drive shaft doesn't have splined ends and ends to take uni joints all formed out of one piece of steel, the ends are welded to a round section of steel cut to length then balanced...

Driveline repair shops weld ends into these shafts daily it’s what those types of shops do. We are not one of those shops we send the driveline out to get the end welded in an balanced.

I used to work for a body shop and would stretch or shorten the chassis on big trucks to turn them into dump trucks and take the drive shafts into a shop to be lengthened or shortened and would ask them to replace the splineed end even though the yoke was loose or not.

Pack the entire spline with JB weld, slide the yoke on and sack it down tight, wait 24 hrs and it will be all right.

Wrap a piece of light gauge copper around the spline put the yolk back in and tap it in that way you can sandwich the piece of copper between them that should stop the movement and then immediately take it to the dealer and trade it in

@@christiancontentministries7701 yes you could. However, at this point if you can't fix it yourself and have to have it done, just put it back together and drive it to the driveline shop. It will still move the truck at this level of wear, but you wouldn't want to try and make money loaded for too long like this.

Replacement should be the only option. A master welder would be liable for the repair and would likely decline to do so as replacement is an option. A lot of fancy heat treating work goes into those parts.

Decade's ago I was behind a tandem dumptruck in a 83 camaro when the bed of the truck starting shaking violently, seconds later a yoke larger than this guy's and part of the driveshaft still attached shot out from under the truck still spinning at incredible rpm's and straight lined like a bowling ball under the front of my camaro bending a tie rod that knocked the steering wheel off center 20 degrees, gouging a hole in the engine oil filter and cutting a slit a few inches long in the floor pan directly under the driver's seat/my seat and I felt that on my buttocks, but all of that occurred in a couple nanoseconds and no time to even consider evasive action...... Funny how you never forget the exciting days........

Yep, needs a new shaft , as well as a yoke. These part , when new, were put on at the same time so, they are going to wear at the same time. Replace both, not just one.

I've seen plenty of transmission and differential yokes like that,but haven't seen the intermediate shaft yoke do that. Quite visible the transition in the lands and grooves from the matted surface and the free surface. I've seen twin take out a carrier bearing, cutting out that nylon twin was a real pain,it was wrapped around everything.

You can shim them, it will work but next time it comes apart it would need replaced. It will get you out of a pinch if you do spin the yoke on the shaft.

That part on driveshaft is called a midship. The best way to fix that is get rid of that involute spline midship an yoke and replace both of them with a 10 spline midship an yoke.

I was told years ago by our autoshop instructor in HS to always grease splines. Through the years shop manuals in everything from aircraft to motorcycles also instruct to grease splines.

I've always had to use a very heavy duty puller to remove those in my experience. And even then it is a bit scary how much torque and pressure you have to put on everything to get it to break lose. And I always leave the nut on at least a few threads just incase when it does break everything doesn't come flying in my face.

Find a lot of this kind of stuff on offroad equipment that is driven also on the highway. The yolk nut comes loose because of the uneven torque application in the mud/dirt. then the splines wear out from the yolk sliding back and forth from being loose.

This exact thing happens on outboard motor lower yokes. The main shaft runs down to the lower yoke and splines into it. Over time the splines wear out and your lower unit will "walk" back and forth at high speed. Often gets mis-diagnosed as bad engine mounts.

You can clearly see the marks of that yoke digging in, that needs the shaft replaced, anything less is a bandaid fix and your gonna wind up doing the shaft anyways later, do it right the first time and save yourself the headache

That is a yoke on a heavy truck that is just forward of a hanger bearing, it isn’t the pinion for the rear axle. A driveline shop will mount the drive shaft in a lathe and cut the weld where this spline is welded into the tube, then install a new spline and reweld it.

i was greasing the drive line on a oilwell service rig and fount a wiggly yoke on th edrop box . the mechenic came out and fixed it without removing the drop box . didn't watch what he did. new yoke maybe .rhe supervisor said get under there and check all the yokes like i hadn't already done that after finding one bad.

Clean it off, mix up your JB weld, slide that yolk on, let that center bolt and washer "home garage" align and center it, let it set overnight, send it down the road. 1 year later you can contact JB weld for a testimonial promotion, and get paid.

I was hoping to get another body and swap the drivetrain but that never happened and I ended up sending that truck to the scrap yard.

Maybe it's just this type of carrier bearing, but the Carriers I replaced all came with the intermediate spline shaft to attach the yoke. or you would press out the existing one and use it on the new carrier. Why not just replace the intermediate shaft? welding seems like a waste of money, time and resources.

The hanger bearing is fine, it's the piece that is supporting the drive shaft. Someone ran the truck with the yoke loose and it's worn the splines on the end of the driveshaft. This has nothing to do with the hanger bearing or carrier bearing.

i had a wobbly harmonic balancer on a Hyundai (I know, for shame, for shame) anyway, The crankshaft had to be weld built back up and ground to fit. Then I sold that 🐶 cheap.

Nah...you could drill holes in the new yolk and expand the holes with different style punches.... The punches will move the metal causing small swelling on yolk.... Do it all the time ...plush you didn't put that nut in with the new one ☺️ great vid tho

They might have caught that quicker if the owner had taken the time to pressure wash the frame and inspected what he found underneath!!! Save $5 pressure washing, spend $500 on a rebuilt driveshaft and loose $2000 on downtime.

I'll share a secret with anyone that cares to read my rambling. If you put "open gear compound" on any spline you encounter, water cannot enter, and cannot wear the splines. It is so thick that only gasoline takes it off of your hands and it will still be there for a few more hand washings. I've done it for years on every spline that's exposed to the elements and it doesn't get me more spline repairs, but it does get me more customers...

Unfortunately we cannot we remove the driveline and send it to a driveline repair shop to have a new end put in and then install a new yoke.. there are shops that do just driveline repairs on small, mid range and heavy duty we don’t have that kind of equipment at our shop

Don't think the majority of the people are actually GRASPING the way he intends to repair it. He is not going to weld the yoke on to the splines. They're going to cut off the end with the bad splines and weld a new end on.

Your right about the new end getting welded on but we don’t do the welding here at our shop we send it out to a local driveline repair shop to have the end welded in

Drill into spline and tap in needle roller bearings all round it , land rover trick
