I think it has to do with their own mental growth. All those edgy little kids out there. Even if they are 30, they clearly never grew up. That is what is so amazing about Vinland Saga. Watching Thorfinn grow up and become more and more like his father is some of the best character development in any story I've read.

Thorffin had a really good progression as a character in slave arc, but after that I slowly stop caring about him and most of the characters, the content was decent but nothing compared to the first 2 arcs.

Dual Dagger Thorfinn was a one page novel. Anyone use to reading literature would know that he was just being lead on and being used. He'd never beat Asskaid in that state of mind. But now? A fully Mature Thorfinn? I'm sure he'd mop the floor with him.

@@marcpop1841 I disagree the character work in this arc was better than alot of the stuff we get in the first arc. Slave arc is the best but this arc I think objectively is on par with the first with the most interesting aspect of that arc being Askeladd but all the other elements developed in this arc are better than all the other elements in the first arc.

Something I think people don't think about is in Askeladd's last words he told Thorfinn to go beyond the sea like Thors. He didn't want Thorfinn to be a slave to revenge anymore, cause if he did he would've told Thorfinn that Floki was the one that hired him to kill Thors.

This arc will make it or break it for some people, most people want Vinland saga to be a typical Viking story. Where thorfinn goes around slaughtering his foes, but I like that he followed in his fathers footsteps. It shows that not all Norsemen were violent pillaging rapists plus his actions have legit consequences, if he reverts back to his old self he will die due to his past transgression.

Just watched another video today called the history of vinland saga where it explains (without spoilers) the history behind Leif, Thorkell, king sweyn, king canute and Thorfinn Karlsefni, who aparently is a descendant of bjorn ironside, and thus probably a descendant of rangnar lothbrok if he truly existed (the same bjorn and ragnar we see in the show Vikings). Oh and fun fact, there is a statue of Thorfinn in Reykjavik I think made by a Norweigian sculptor named Einar, so that's probably a reference from the author

The scene you talked about where thorfin was blinded by his rage and was about to kill floki but his grandson saves him. I think that scene was really strong because as you mentioned if thorfinn would have killed him the cycle of revenge and violence would have continued. But i also think that scene was strong because there was hilde who was keeping an eye on thorfinn. Thorfinn killed her father but she was able to forgive him and allow him to atone for his sins. So if thorfinn would have killed floki than hilde would have killed him as he was not able to show forgiveness to floki as hilde forgive thorfinn. I think that's why that scene was strong

I'd have to disagree with you on the "meeting with Floki has been built up". It hasn't been built up. It's never mentioned by any of the characters leading up to the meeting in this arc. In the readers mind the build up is there but it's not as if the author has been building up to the moment.

I think that something that would have improved the confrontation between Floki and Thorfinn would be that Thorfinn had asked him why did he had his father murdered. It would have been a good character moment for both, Floki finally telling the real petty reasons he had for killing Thors, and Thorfinn realizing his foe si no Demon but simply a man, and a weak one at that, and that as his father said it no man is his enemy.

I mean that just seems unnecessary. We do find out that why he killed Thors it's just as Thorfinn doesn't, we get a character moment from Thorfinn when he decides not to kill Floki. And the philosophy that no man is his enemy would kinda be undermined if he needs to find a justification for why Thorfinn shouldn't harm floki don't you think and would go against alot of build up and character development we have been given since for Thorfinn.
@lampad4549

Yeah coming off the greatness of the farmland arc, the Baltic Sea arc is a mixed bag. I loved the concepts introduced like Hild basically being like Thorfinn in past, Thorfinn struggling with moving on beyond his past and not pursuing revenge but honestly the arc just lacked the strong execution that the previous arc had. If there was one thing I wish was explored better, it was idea of Thorfinn being considered a wolf in sheep’s clothing by other Vikings. It was such strong hook that got me so invested that I was disappointed that yukimura didn’t really follow up with that. I agree with you it was an entertaining arc but it was more or less in 7/10 territory.
@lampad4549

Your comment is a bit confusing, you said you loved the concepts introduced in this arc but thought the execution was bad, but then you go on the criticize the story for not addressing a particular concept that wasnt emphasized on that much to be vital to the story to begin with. So I don't know where your real issues are but it seems you are criticising it for not doing what you wanted it to do.
@kaizakira

Mel On I think you may be over analyzing my comment because my comment can literally be summed up by what you said at the end. I am pretty much criticizing the arc for not doing what I wanted it to do lol. Just to clarify things, I’m going on basis of how I felt about the arc after finishing it, I did not say the execution was bad I said it was lacking compared to previous arc big difference. The idea of Thorfinn being a wolf in sheep stood out to me which is probably why it felt a strong hook which made me personally made me think that yukimura would further explore it as a concept. Obviously yukimura did not further explore this concept which is fine it’s still a solid arc but I was disappointed it wasn’t elaborated upon and it affected my personal reading experience of the arc. It can summed as I had personal expectations in the story by which they weren’t met which led the opinion on how I feel about this arc.

I'm sure in the minority but I hated the end of this arc. HATED IT. I despise the way Thorfinn gets away with his pacifist BS in a Viking society which would most likely stick an axe on the back of his skull as soon as he turned around. There was a severe lack of loss, pain, death and tragedy at the end of what was supposed to be a no-holds-barred war. Plus, the romance at the end was handled very childishly, even Shoujos are more direct and more sincere with their handling of romance. It was pretty fucking dumb. I've only read 1 more chapter after the end of this arc and it's after a time skip. It disappointed me so much that I haven't touched the manga since. I'm honestly thinking of dropping it cause it doesn't seem to be the manga for me anymore.
@ChawedMirthPrattEnterprise

thats... kinda the point of what thorfinn's doing. its very clear that what hes doing is probably going to get him killed, multiple characters have said so. the point of vinland saga and thorfinn's character development is becoming essentially a warrior of the mind, becoming someone who doesnt need a sword and can instead make a better world through peace, rather than violence, like canute. i can see why youre disappointed, but this is a result of the manga progressing. thorfinn succeeding in becoming more of a pacifist was inevitable, something good had to happen in this series eventually because without it, youd probably be even more disappointed because thorfinn wouldve just ended up in the same place he was at the end of the slave arc.
@cloudtx

@@ChawedMirthPrattEnterprise I agree that this is the way of Thorfinn's character growth has been channeled so this may be the point of the author, I'm not saying the author betrayed the character or anything like that, but I just don't think it works within in a Viking society/period. It comes across as phony and stupid. I could agree with 1 or 2 things going his way at the end of this arc but EVERYTHING? With everyone just nodding their heads and agreeing to make peace with very little bloodshed? Nah, that comes across as BS. And I wouldn't be disappointed if the ending of the arc was mostly happy, that wasn't my point, my point was that there was no tragedy, no loss. Thorfinn got away with everything he wanted and that feels completely unbelievable to me. The world is too cruel to just let him ride into the sunset of that war without at least 1-2 things going wrong.

@@cloudtx you are correct but then story will end. The world is too cruel as you said for thorfinn to get away with these things. But that's the point, realistically he will be dead and forgotten immediately. But that wouldn't make good story would it. Unfortunately people like thorfinn get murdered and forgotten in real life, that's why there is always suffering and cruelty majority of times. There is some good in this world but not enough.
@lampad4549

Well in a Viking society you normally wouldn't be able to throw boulders across lakes and spears across fields or leap over moats. The superhuman capabilities of Thorfinn give enough justification for him to get away with his "Pacifist BS". And what source do you have to prove that in a viking society you would most likely get an axe stuck in the back of your head? Vikings were barbaric yes but not to that extent and the manga doesn't even portray vikings in that manner so where did you get this idea from? I mean this war had one of the most nihilistic chapters in the series the one with warrior experiencing death. And there was alot of death in this arc sure none of the named characters died but why would that be necessary since the point of it was test thorfinn in a war and showcase the hope that the cycle of violence can be broken. Well shojos do have great romances and some of the best ones in manga plus miura was inspired by Shojos when writing the romance in berserk so saying shojos are better in romance isnt really an insult nor does it set a low bar. And the romance was handled well in the series,it wasnt instant and we got the development that justified that growth of affection. And the end is one confessing their feelings and the other reciprocates due to that mutual growth and then they get into a relationship how do you get more direct than that and sincere than that. You need to explain what was dumb about it. What disappointed you? Well if you are dropping the series fine but if you claim this series isnt for you based on the reasonings stated before than it clearly is still for you cause your reasonings for not liking it either dont make sense or dont match what was given.

That's what it always was. The pacifist stuff was there since the beginning but the feminist stuff was introduced was emphasized more in this arc but what's wrong with that, in a society that put men at the forefront in making all the major decisions and women aren't given as much privilege there is nothing wrong with having female characters present in your story that fight against that idea.
