What rubbed salt in the wound even more regarding Lostprophets is that Ian Watkins is also the name of one of the members of British vocal group Steps (usually known by the nickname Ian 'H' Watkins), and publications were using his image instead of that of the Lostprophets singer when reporting his arrest.

Well, at least we got a song by Kunt and the Gang about it, if you want to know it was called "The Wrong Ian Watkins". If the journalists did their due diligence, that mixup wouldn't have happened. No wonder why "H" goes by "H", and rightly so... it's better than sharing a name with the sicko from the found followers.

That Lostprophets one…😳 I wasn’t expecting that one. I know the things that Ian did. In fact, I was rewatching a breakdown of what went down with him just last night. Sickening and disturbing. It sucks because The Fake Sound of Progress is a killer nu metal debut. What a shame that the lead singer had to waste away the whole band in a way like that. Just…sick.

The first time I got introduced to the band was when I played Need for Speed Underground as a kid and "To Hell We Ride" was on the soundtrack- a nice bop when I was racing. There was even a secret unlockable Lostprophets livery for the Skyline GT-R in that game. Thanks to Watkins, it is just hard to dig up that nostalgia now. That car and that song just...I can't get to play them the same way I did as a kid anymore knowing what happened.

I just found this out recently. Chester Bennington of Linkin Park (and a CSA survivor himself) found out about rumors of Ian several years before his arrest, and began refusing to have Linkin Park play on the same festivals as Lostprophets. Layne Staley’s addiction and slow death truly breaks my heart. It still just messes with my head how such a talented man with so many loved ones was able to isolate himself, but still have some friends visit him, was so deep in his addiction that no one was able to get through to him and get him help. Having looked into his recluse years, he was so far gone by the time he died that it’s a miracle he survived as long as he did. I know that back then people weren’t super knowledgeable about addiction and rehab and mental health, still, I don’t know how everyone around him allowed him to keep doing drugs, it’s almost like Layne had cancer and chose not to go through treatment and everyone was okay with it. To me, it’s almost like his drug addiction was normal, like a disability or something and that there was no cure for him. Sorry for rambling, it’s just Layne’s addiction, how he lived his life and how talented and loved he was makes me sad. Along with the rest of AIC, I’m sure they felt hurt and broken while Layne slowly ended his own life through drugs.
@MunkeeFWRrng

They tried but it’s not like they could force him to stay in rehab if he didn’t want to. The story of Layne’s demise is horrible and tragic but no blame should be placed upon anyone aside from Layne and his father who got him addicted in the first place. I do think that if things happened in this era where there’s a better understanding of addiction and mental health as you stated that Layne might have had a chance to overcome his issues. R.I.P Layne and Mike.

I’m reminded of one of my favourite bands, Brainiac. Everything sounds just like the Exploding Hearts story, with media outlets claiming them as the new Nirvana. All of that went away with Tim Taylor’s accident, the brains behind the masterful band. For years, the only music to come out of any of the members was from guitarist John Schmersal in the form of the band Enon. This year, the remaining members came back together for a special one-off EP using what demos they had left over. Really a sad story from an amazing project.

What makes the Lostprophets story even worse was that there was a woman (I want to say she was Ian's ex) who knew about all the shit he was doing, and for years tried to get the cops to do something, but they ignored her every time. Finally, when she found evidence, they arrested him...and also her, too, for owning the evidence. Thankfully i think she was able to beat the charges, but can you imagine how awful thay must feel? Knowing about an awful crime, but unable to get anyone to listen, and when they finally do listen they arrest you, too, even though you did nothing wrong.

Now that you're aware of them, you should take a deeper look at No Devotion's history at some point! My dad had had the same problems back when he was trying to get his band going back in the late 60s. His manager used the money that the band was making instead of what the label was giving to the manager to use for the band. Essentially, it was the practice of paying DJs to play your music. Though the manager was scummy.

Unfortunately, there are plenty of other acts I can think of that fit this description. Joy Division I thought for sure would be on this list. Obviously, that story didn't end there since the other members were able to keep things going with New Order, but what happened to Ian Curtis really is a tragedy and I will always wonder what if. Lynyrd Skynyrd is another obvious one. I know they managed to get going again eventually, but by all accounts that plane crash put a sudden and abrupt end to their golden period. One that I want to shout out from a personal standpoint is Type O Negative. They're one of my parents' favorite bands, so I grew up hearing their stuff all the time. Sadly, their frontman Peter Steele had a sudden, fatal heart attack at the too young age of 48 and the rest of the band knew there was no to keep it going without him. Seeing as they were showing no signs of slowing down before that, I'll always wonder what could have been.

The Exploding Hearts story reminds me of a similar story I have from when I was interning at a major label in early 2016 (that I don't want to disclose the name of for privacy reasons). I was interning in the A&R department, and a thing I did a lot was scour Spotify's Viral 50 chart to find any artists there that were either independent or unsigned, and then do further research into them. There was one indie band I found called Viola Beach from England. I thought "Holy crap, this band sounds great!" Then I found out why they were on that chart. It was because the whole band and their manager had just died from their car falling off a bridge. I remember being really bummed out because they were one of the only artists I found through my ventures at this internship that really stuck with me. Especially with how young they were, with them only having been around since 2013. Their posthumous self-titled album came out in the summer of 2016 and you best believe I bought that on iTunes when I was made aware.

Goodness, you could probably list 70 more bands like this. It's so sad to think about. A few I know about: Her's fate was like the Exploding Hearts and a band mentioned in the comments here, Viola Beach: the duo from Liverpool was gaining attention for a series of singles and albums released over the late 2010s, but while their manager was driving them between gigs in a North American tour, a pickup truck driving the wrong way crashed into them, killing the manager and both band members. It's surreal seeing that band's afterlife. That tragedy was how I'd found out about them, but they're still popular even now: you can see comments from multiple of their music videos from newer fans who'd discovered the band years after their deaths, who hadn't even known their fates until listening to their music for years. It's a bittersweet feeling: seeing their music reach new fans without being overshadowed by the tragedy that ended careers, but being sad knowing they didn't live to see it. The band Blue Smiley gives me similar feelings of bittersweetness. They were a cool little shoegazey indie rock band, anchored by sole constant member Brian Nowell, which released a flurry of EPs and short albums in just a couple years, between 2014 and 2016. But, like a certain other band featuring a singer with a similar name, its light would be snuffed out before it could even fully burn when Brian died suddenly in October 2017. He was just 26. Like that other band, Sublime, their popularity only skyrocketed after the cessation of their activities, though their gains in fame were over years after their end instead of immediately after like with Sublime's self-titled major-label debut. I found out about them from Spotify recommendations while listening to fellow Philly DIY rockers Empath, and given the many other people who've recently found their work, I'm not alone in that. At least one of the surviving members have stated that they would never make new songs without Brian, leaving their existing catalogue as a monument to Brian's creative work. But they've also announced potential new developments in the future, though they haven't stated exactly what they could be: possibly a posthumous release? Live recordings? Demos? We'll wait and see. Sublime could of course make a whole entry of their own, given Bradley's death ending the band right as they reached the most success of their entire career. Speaking of bittersweet bands, Calgary band Women are a prime example. The recording of their sophomore album _Public Strain_ in 2010 was already a grueling, protracted process, but after smooth-sailing in a UK tour to promote their album, the North American leg of their tour turned into a nightmare: dealing with a van that constantly broke down and having to leave many of their belongings for a much more stable vehicle for much longer than anticipated increased the bad blood between the band members until tensions culminated in an onstage fight in late October that sent the band into a premature hiatus. Less than two years later, Chris Reimer died in his sleep of a previously undiagnosed heart condition, ending the band for good. He was 26. Since then, _Public Strain_ has grown in influence and popularity in underground rock, gaining a mythic status among many experimental rock fans and earning decade-end accolades. The surviving members have moved onto their own projects: Matthew Flegel and Mike Wallace play driving post-punk with a band formerly known as Viet Cong and now named Preoccupations, while Matthew's sibling Pat delved deeper into a more experimental, '60s-pop inspired direction with their project Cindy Lee. The latter's most famous album, What's Tonight to Eternity, ends in a song named "Heavy Metal," a haunting and beautiful tribute to their fallen friend and bandmate. Chris himself has a couple posthumous albums to his name, most recently _Hello People_: I would be remiss if I didn't mention a song from that album, "Waving Goodbye From a Tree," which is a genuinely beautiful tearjerker of an instrumental. I was going to mention Fishmans as well, given the untimely passing of their vocalist Shinji Sato, but from the looks of it the surviving members have periodically reunited and played shows and even recorded new material in the years since his passing, so that makes me happy to see, at least.

If there's a part 2 you must include Savatage! One of the greatest and most influential 80's metal bands, though they're rarely heard of today. The lead guitarist, Criss Oliva, was killed by a drunk driver in 1993 and it crushed his brother, Jon, the lead singer. Though a few more albums were released under the Savatage name after Criss' death with a menagerie of artists, sometimes with Jon on vocals but usually not, he said that after Criss died the band was basically done. He only kept going to "keep his brother's music alive." Thankfully he has managed to find success afterwards, as he and Al Pitrelli (another Savatage member) founded the Trans Siberian Orchestra, a relatively well known orchestral show in the US that performs Christmas music in a metal style, they even perform old Savatage songs sometimes. Jon rarely performs with them anymore but he is reportedly at every show and hangs around to speak to fans afterwards. Criss was, simply put, a musical genius and he was taken too soon. This October will be 30 years since he was gone, I never even inhabited this planet at the same time as him but he's one of my greatest musical influences and I hope I can play half as well as him one day. This winter I'm going to see the TSO and I hope I get a chance to tell Jon that Criss is still alive today in the hearts and the strings of people all across the world. Metal will never die and neither will Savatage 🤘

16:10 You didn't mention the three times there were "reunions" of the surviving members of Led Zeppelin, solely as a live act- the first being for their infamous performance in Live-Aid in 1985, the second one in 1988 for the 40th anniversary of Atlantic Records, and the last one in 2007, as a tribute act in the UK after record producer Ahmet Ertugul's death. Bonham's son Jason would be drummer in the last two. In all cases- they did perform under the Led Zeppelin name. And obviously, I'm not even counting Jimmy Page and Plant's collab album in 1994.

cardiacs, their history is just misfortune after misfortune and its a shame that they only started to get proper positive appraisal after the lead singer had a cardiac arrest and became disabled

It's nice to know that my daily consumption of alcohol at its worst (and it was bad), could not match that of John Bonham. Guess I'll keep on keepin' on.

To think, that one Welsh band was supposed to be one of our best feet forward for Welsh rock music, and then Ian threw it all away by doing what he did, and he had no remorse either for the thing that he did, he was/is a sick bastard, ruining it not only for himself but for the other members too. I feel no real urge to listen to their music and the remaining members never play their past discography, and all of their music is banned from airplay on radio as a result of Ian's actions. I had to skip that part to the Alice in Chains section, I couldn't stomach the section about the Lost Prophets.

Yeah, it's a shame they were pretty much the only Welsh band in the 00's that cracked America (besides maybe Bullet For My Valentine)

@@iliketrains3495 I still absolutely love Bullet For My Valentine. At least BFMV and Skindred haven't had anything nefarious come out about them to my knowledge. (I used to own a copy of Guitar Hero: World Tour that had one of their songs on, obviously I didn't play it because I wasn't that into their music, but also years later with the knowledge of what Ian did, I couldn't in good conscience keep the game, I gave it to my local CeX, which is a second hand video game/DVD shop in the UK. I believe the song in the game was "Rooftops").

Badfinger seems to have been doomed from the start, given Pete Ham's relationship with people in general, management and girls. It's all there in his songs, especially the girls. Also, a stupid haircut, the shag. There was something genius and stupid about him, and he seems to have left a stain on his bandmates.

Sublime is a band that lost their singer to a drug overdose just before the band hit it big. I think they are a good candidate.

Bands end in individual tragedy, or group stupidity. That's what you get, unless you want The Chieftains or some such thing. What do you want, glory or mediocrity? Actually, I guess it can be a mix of both...

Thanks for not simply revisiting every trauma of the '90s, and my teenage years, which could have composed the entire video. Lynyrd Skynyrd would have been a worthy inclusion, imo.

I didn't know, or had repressed it, that Skynryd, or some iteration of, were still active. The debut album feels too iconic to not retire the name.
