I dig it. You can get good espresso with a good grinder and a cheap espresso machine, but you can't get good espresso with a bad grinder and expensive espresso machine.

This cheap espresso maker does the job; I will upgrade one day to something better (heat consistency wise and of course with a manual on and off) but the biggest lack on this machine is the ability to do really good micro frothing - big hit and miss delta ... And when I do get it good, I can barely get latte art done lol

@@AbrahamChan88 I have the same machine, I also use it without the panarello wand on it. Have you tried doing a pitcher transfer before doing a pour? Also if you preheat the brew head and your mug by pulling like 2 blank shots it helps make sure your temp is closer to being on-track. I think that these two things made a big difference in my results.

@@MichaelDude12345 yes, the pour transfer is a great way to remove the undesired foam, in my case my children love drinking it so it is a win win for me haha. The temperature issue is always present and drops way too much during the pull, I used an infrared temperature gun to validate the numbers. That said, again, this is quite the fun machine to learn on and I have gifted it. Check out my other video with Breville Dual Boiler.

Thanks for the video and detailed replies on the comments. I have delonghi 685 and recently got sette 270. Struggling to get the grind size right. What grind size would you suggest for espresso on Delonghi 685.
@AbrahamChan88

There are many variables such as bean size (including uniformity of the size) processing roast quality and levels, age and more, such as your taste preference vs mine to be able to pin point a grind size over the Internet! That said, for a lot of medium roast (Costa Rican, Brazilian, Ethiopian) single origin beans of 1-3 week old, I was generally in the 13D range to get a sweet drink. Light roast Costa Rican brands I was grinding in 11D range. One of the biggest variables with the EC685 is the 51mm portafilter; it is "deep" and my single best purchase (other than cutting off the bottom to see channeling which is where I discovered the issue) was a distribution tool - to gently shuffle grinds into a leveled puck before doing the main consistent tamping. So the three glasses method to discover and fine tune the process: have three shot glasses; ballpark a pull ratio of 1:2 (coffee grind to output, use a scale; volume is okay to get started as per your video, but you really want totalweight; crema vs liquid weight) to be fine within 24-32 seconds on this machine. Line up the glasses ready to swap them in ... The first 6-10 seconds of the coffee goes on the first glass, the next 6-10 seconds into the second glass and the remain pull in the third glass. The first glass will be hottest and most sour ... And third glass will be the coldest and bitter (with a more light golden colour aka more caffeine) .. and the second glass will be hopefully the sweetness of the three with a nice colour. You can keep changing your variable until the second glass the sweetest but lacking body and from there pull a full shot into a single glass and stopping it where you think best for your preference for sweetest vs full body taste.

Hi, I have been trying to figure out how to use this combi of EC685 with the 270i for a long time. Thks! At 2.14 in the vid, you mentioned adjusting the 'level' of 1mm depth less. Can i know what are you referring to here

When I adjust the grind amount (and the grind size of the macro setting) I will put the basket on a bodyweight scale and tamp to ~30lbs --- as leveled as I can. You be surprised how much pressure you have to put to get ~20-30lbs! I then eyeball the basket and the level of the grind to set my leveler's height and I keep adjusting until it touches =) Tamp pressure set and leveled!

@@AbrahamChan88 Thanks for the reply! I have been having problems trying to slow down my extraction. I'm currently extracting 30g coffee from 15g of beans (single dosing on the 270) in under 20s. I've gone from grinding 11E to 7E now and the extraction time has only improved maybe 1-2s. I'm wondering if i should just tune it finer. Did you have this fast extraction issue before?
@AbrahamChan88
3 жыл бұрын
@@engstan932 You welcome! WOW! As you can read from other chats on this video, 7E would choke the machine. With 15g of coffee, do you still have ~1.5cm of space to the rim on the portafilter? Does your leveller go that deep? Maybe try tamping first only, on a scale to see what 20-30lbs feels like and give that whirl. If you have really tamped at 20-30lbs of pressure and your coffee beans are stale (sorry, not trying to be rude) then maybe you can go finer or up the 15g to 18g + to get more grinds.

Any issue with the grinder? I also have delonghi dedica and kg521.. not happy with the grinder.. what's the grind settings with baratza? How fine of grind settings can dedica hold up?
@AbrahamChan88
4 жыл бұрын
The grinder is holding up well. To be honest, the combo of the Dedica and the KG521 is pretty good when starting out; the pressurized basket needs nothing finer and in fact does better slightly course (check your dosages by weight, not necessarily by volume as shown in my own video lol). I still use the kg521 for drip, French press coffee and cold brew; it is a quieter grinder and does well for the applications whereas the Sette cannot do this unless you buy different burrs. If you have changed to a non-pressurized basket, this Settle is amazing. There isn't one grind setting that does it all ... Each bean is different, as the same bean ages, I can adjust the output on a micro level. Please ask more questions! Sorry, I didn't notice any messages on this video until now.

There is no grind setting for all beans; I am all over the map between 16 to 7 on the macro setting to get 1:2 weighted ratios depending on the bean ... Some beans like the Mexican bean I am drinking now, I like it better at a 1:2.5 ratio but pulled slightly faster (24 seconds) to have less bitterness.

@@whoami724y No, I would not encourage pouring hot water into the container. The best that can be done with this machine let it warm up with the portafilter locked in (no need to wait too long as it is not a boiler but a thermoblock, good and bad), pull one or two empty shots through the portafilter into the drinking glass, quickly dry portafilter, fill and tamp with grinds, empty drinking cup, dry (so it is still warm) and brew your coffee.

It depends with your long term goals, do you want to make this a hobby in pursuit of pulling the best extractions out of quality beans? Or just a cup of good coffee with decent beans that is better or same as served by your average local cafe? Or something in between? For me, I have been using a manual lever for a long time and I have pulled many drinks from a friend's commerical machine --- so I knew I wanted to make this a hobby in getting the best of my beans, local roasters, Cafe Britt, HasBean, the list goes on. The grinder is an investment, it works really well with my Breville Dual Boiler and I have no need to upgrade it. So why did I have the Delonghi? Cost; 4+ years ago I wasn't ready to spend money in the $4k range and the Breville wasn't proven yet (900 had some issues, 920 was new back then). I surprised myself by using this Delonghi for so long, I think it is because I had to push myself to hone my skills and understanding of extraction as best as I could to compensate for what the machine could not do. Read my other comments about the machine. It does the job, but it is far from the best ... But at $200 CAD, it was a winner while I waited to upgrade ... And I had fun playing with the bottomless portafilter and many different baskets lol If you aren't going to go nuts and spend money on quality roasted beans, the Breville Express Pro (note the pro, it is the newer grinder with a macro multiplier to make the "micro" adjustments more fine) is a very hard machine to beat. If you have a local coffee shop, give them a visit, they will take you through the differences. Bring your own beans and pull some shots ;)

@@OneShotKiller1996 You welcome! In all my videos, I state a "please leave a comment" and I really mean it =) I am no world barista champion, far from it, but I have my experiences to share, be it right or wrong and I think that is what makes KZitem great --- the ability to just share =) Coffee is one of those things that you need someone to walk through it (hence the note about visiting a local coffee shop that can do that for you) or have friends (or family) that you can test things out on (either their equipment or them as the taste testers hah ha). The Breville Express is okay, however, the improvements made on the Pro is worth it. If I were to drink commercial bulk beans (think Costco, like the Lavazza beans I should in this video), the Pro would be great as a phenomenal zero hassle setup --- that said, as per this video, the modified Delonghi with the Sette grinder rocks it. A word of caution about "cheap" (which is what I did) single-wall (non-pressurized) baskets in the 51mm; they are all very different --- I have three, and all three drain water (gravity fed) at a different rate =( VSTs/competition baskets don't exist (or at least I have not found them) in the 51mm. Before you jump on the Sette 270w (the w is the key thing), play around some more to find out if you like the direct portafilter grinding or not --- otherwise you can look into single dosers like the Niche (but you will need a separate weigh scale) --- you get to dictate your fun =)

@@OneShotKiller1996 Your barista buddy is going to laugh at you when you taste shots pulled by him on the same beans you were drinking --- I get this reaction all the time from friends, then they find out I "only" have a Delonghi and a BDB. I do not have videos of the modifications (sorry) but the main thing is to remove the auto-frother, go bottomless (I used a Dremel to cut it off as seen in this video), and single-wall baskets. One of the biggest challenges I had was keeping brew pressure up (no gauge to tell me) but I could taste the difference in the narrow 51mm channeling issues, so that is why the bottomless portafilter helps, visually, to see what and where my tamping issue is. As you have a friend to guide you through the variables, debate with him on your next machine when that time comes --- what you want now will be different from what you need later. However, in my opinion (since you are asking) I would skip machines like the Giggia Classic Pro and go with a brass boiler with a PID like the Lelitt Anna 2 --- and if your focus is on espresso more often than a milk drink, you can stick with a single boiler and save some money =)

With this machine, too many variables of the machine itself was not consistent (temperature surfing even with the purge I do before using and so on, the pump itself with its pressure) so in this video I indicated how I preset the distributors depth to act like my tamper which I preset with a tamper on a body weight scale. With the naked bottom it noticeably showed through the better channeling results! Keep asking questions, let's share thoughts!

However, that could be quite sour depending on other parameters; to your point, to pull the shot shorter at the sacrifice of a weaker body.
