In May 2023, we wanted to visit Spain, more precisely the Basque Country. Our round trip began in Bilbao, then led along the coast to the French border and back via the hinterland. You’ll find a few impressions of this exciting coast here. The first hike to the former monastery of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe was our first highlight. It is on top of a rocky island near the coast and is connected to the mainland by a brick bridge. No wonder that this location served as a film set for “Game of Thrones”. The journey continued via Mundaka and Leikeitio. Afterwards we visited the beach of Zumaia, which belongs to the UNESCO Geoparkea and we were overwhelmed by the spectacular rock formations, flysch. Via Donostia-SanSebastián with its extensive sandy beach we continued to Hondarribia on the border with France. At the end of our trip we enjoyed the view from the Puente Vizcaya / Bizkaiko Zubia to the estuary of the river Nervión in the Atlantic. This bridge - near Bilbao - is the oldest transporter bridge in the world which is still in operation and connects the two towns of Portugalete and Getxo. It was inaugurated in 1893 and is now recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.This coast is really wonderful, but we also enjoyed the hinterland.
