Nice video! Great looking fruits! I think that they may be the same!

Calderona filling the void in the center with honey - not the eye! Oops

Maybe someday we could publicly fund DNA tests using multiple trusted sources and find out how close all these fig possible synonyms really are :D

That would be nice. Until then, I am considering the two interchangeable.

I got BFF from Bass and loved it. I added Calderona from a friend who got it from Eric. Nothing wrong with having two great fig trees. I found Cessac to be very close to Smith. Have you compared those two?

I don’t have Cessac - I have a close friend that does not think they are the same.

Hey Chris, Thanks for the insight. I have been wanting a BFF but already have two Calderonas so may just hold off for now.

Hi 👋🏽 Chris, awesome video and comparison! Will plant my craven's craving(CC) fig in ground in SFBA(9B) this winter. Harvey say CC is likely same as black madeira(BM), would you say calderona is a BM type?
@oregonfigs3314

Yes CC is a BM type. Calderona is not even remotely like a BM type. The BM types get SUPER SWEET and Calderona does not get anywhere as sweet. Calderona is one of Montserrat Pons’ favorite fig varieties. It is incredibly complex and you should have both Calderona and a BM type. Mario #50 is absolutely blowing me away this year. I have never had a BM type ripen so early and be so incredibly prolific at the same time. I will be doing a video on #50 very soon.

Thank you so much, I have been trying to figure this out for months, your answer goes a long way, I will graft an in-ground with BFF or Calderona.

Since they are mid to late, do they ripen consistently here? It would be great if you could do a summary video of say top 5 figs for the PNW considering productivity, taste, etc. Your videos are super useful but they all look so good I'm having a difficult time deciding!

This is the first year for BFF to ripen for me. I do believe it either is Calderona or so close it is splitting hairs. I am planting Calderona in ground next spring as an experiment. Last year my whole Calderona crop ripened. We had an incredible fall last year. I alway tell people to pick up a couple Mt. Etnas if you want to eat figs in the PNW. Breba crop varieties are a must - Desert King and a LDA type are great choices. I’m excited to try Grantham’s Royal for Breba 🤞🤞🤞

@@oregonfigs3314 I do have a Desert King in ground and had some for the first time this year, very good. I also have a Negronne but not sure that's a Mt Etna.

@@JohnDurso82 -It is a VDB type - Red Lebanese Bekaa Valley is a good Etna and reasonably priced. There are many great Mt. Etnas!
