+hoggy2much999 It didn't have an "-A" suffix as Sisko was given special dispensation to rename the Sao Paulo to the Defiant, to honour the loss of the first one. It is known as the Defiant (II) on the wikis, and it has the exact same registry.

Ginger Boy-Watkins What a load of crap! So prey tell me just where the hell you got that shit from? Almost every ship (there are exceptions like for instance the USS Hood or Intrepid) are given the "A" designation if it is the same name as it's predecessor. That's why we have the Enterprise 1701-A, B,C,D,E The USS Enterprise 1701-A was originally called the USS Yorktown before Starfleet renamed it to Enterprise and gave it to Kirk The USS Enterprise 1701-E was originally going to be called The USS Honorious before being renamed by Starfleet. It was meant to be The USS Defiant-A but budget constraints prevented them from doing so as it would have meant changing all the stock footage that was used and the existing Defiant model. Here see for yourself on the name: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Defiant memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/USS_Sao_Paulo#Appendices So I have no idea where you got your shit from or what rubbish you have been reading but I suggest that you stick to using memory-alpha the official Star Trek wiki. You see, there's a valid reason to use Miranda class ships. +Leonardo Ceballos You can't think of any other Galaxy Class Ships being destroyed other than The Odyssey! YOU FREAKING WHAT!? Er what about The USS Enterprise NCC 1701-D which was destroyed over Veridian III. Or The USS Yamato which was destroyed by a failure of the Anti-matter containment seals after being infected by the Iconian computer. I think you need to watch Star Trek again. But you are right on one thing. Very few Galaxy Class ships get destroyed. Those are the only three I can think off.
@magicstix0r
7 жыл бұрын
Actually Galaxy class ships were considered a failure (or perhaps more accurately, an experiment that didn't pan out). That's why they only built a handful. They were considered uneconomical to build, and, because they carried whole families, it was even worse if one was destroyed. That's why there weren't any other ships of comparable size and mission profile built after the Galaxies were retired.
@eXcommunicate1979
7 жыл бұрын
I think the TNG technical manual says the Galaxy Class space frames are rated for 100 years, with a refit schedule of 20 year intervals. Also, the whole "failure" thing is just fanfiction bs. The Yamato was destroyed by a computer virus, something that could happen to any ship. The Enterprise was destroyed by Riker's incompetence. The Odyssey was destroyed by a kamikaze attack after losing its shields and taking massive damage. None of these things point to a "failure" of the class. The fact that they are used in fleet actions as a weapons platform shows that Starfleet did not view them as failures in the slightest.

"This war, Captain. It has to end." "And it will. Soon. One way or the other." - Odo and Benjamin Sisko, 2375 ("What You Leave Behind") The Battle of Cardassia (also known as the Invasion of Cardassia) was the final battle of the Dominion War, fought in late 2375. The Federation Alliance, the forces of the United Federation of Planets, the Klingon Empire, and the Romulan Star Empire, launched an invasion of the Dominion-held Cardassian Union, with the goal of capturing the Dominion's capital on Cardassia Prime. The battle would ultimately lead to the Dominion's unconditional surrender of all forces in the Alpha Quadrant. The events of the battle were related to concurrent events on Cardassia Prime in the final stages of the Cardassian Rebellion, led by Legate Damar. The sabotage committed by the Cardassian insurgents played an important role in disrupting Dominion communications and support behind the front lines, and ultimately led to the Cardassian military switching sides. Before the battle was over, however, more than 800 million Cardassian civilians would be killed by Dominion genocide, leaving the once-proud capital planet in ruins.

+Randy Woodworth The Enterprise according to memory-alpha was basically demoted to ambassadorial missions and flying the Federation Flag and letting it's allies know that The Federation hadn't forgotten about them. The Dominion War was mentioned in Insurrection and one of the reason the Enterprise was at that planet was it was looking for new weaponry. A couple of books mentions that it did take part in The Battle Of Betazed and one of the battles of Earth so it wasn't completely out. But the real reason of why we don't see any Sovereign class ships is that Paramount wanted to keep them movie exclusive just in the same way that we have never seen a Constitution II Class Ship (i.e Enterprise-A) outside of the movies. That's why we don't see any during the Dominion War even though there was at least 3 made by then. Also you need to remember that DS9 only focused on the battles involving the DS9 crew. In quite a few episodes Admiral Ross mentions the "Third fleet", "fifth fleet", "Tenth fleet" etc. The Enterprise could easily have been in any of those other fleets protecting other important Federation worlds. Also they weren't about to bring in the TNG cast. Hope that helps a bit.

fa de Faster in Sublight yes save for the fighters. They do have shields hell they have plant wide shields on some worlds. The Avrg star destroyer can glass a planet and take hits. You shoot a Star Trek ship once and half the bridge consoles blow up. The Empire ground troops lost on endor yes but have many more cases of being efficient ground troops with heavy support. Star Wars has a much higher industrial output and far larger numbers. The Fed has a fleet of around 4k This is due to the 2k ships the dominion tried to send threw the wormhole once the minefield was clear was going to be seen as a death sentence. The GE on the other hand had around 25 to 27k ships. Yes the GE does not have transporters but i feel that is more then outweighed by the the MASSIVE advantage in speed when it comes to hyperspace. The only Star Trek race who can match them are the Borg and even then they have to use a network that can be targeted. The GE while controling half a the galaxy the rest being the unknown regions still spanned the distance of the galaxy from its say northern rim to its southern and was able to effectively move troops and communicate. Meanwhile Voyager at first not only was going to take many decades to travel what the GE spans it couldn't even communicate with earth at first.

you realise this is a fan edit and not what they showed in the episode right? in fact most of those clips are from the battle of chin'toka in whatever episode that took part in and were NOT re-used in the battle of cardassia

this raised two very big question. 1) these ships seem awful frail, remember in classic and even STNG the ships give and take heavy blows that batter the shield but here it's one hit and your gone. 2) the federation and cardasians had a war. the cardi's here need the jemhadar to hold the federation back and so why didn't the federation flatten them the last time?

Wish they could cut out the recycled material and create some original footage. Maybe a fan made edit someday. Awesome Trek show either way.

Trouble is, scenes like that are murder on a TV Show Budget, it's why you see a lot of recycled footage. Star Trek was still using Practical Effects for a lot of its Space Scenes even back when DS9 was into its final seasons - some CGI work was beginning to be used, but not to the extent it was on shows such as B5 and other shows that were beginning to come on stream - doing exploding ships etc with Practical Models is a killer for budgets as you tend to chew through dozens of the damned things just for five or so minutes of usable footage.

Anybody else notice that Miranda-class starships are pretty much just cannon fodder whenever there is an engagement? Seriously, they seem to be on screen just to invent new ways of grossly destroying them and their crews...😒

How the hell does the Federation have a billion Miranda and Excelsior class ships, but not a single Ambassador or Constitution class?
@cellulanus
6 жыл бұрын
That doesn't answer the question of why really. The Constitution refit was awfully similar to the Miranda after all so I don't understand why one would stay in service so much longer then the other. And the Ambassador was meant to be the next in line from the Excelsior. The fact that they have so many of the older models and none of the model meant to replace it just raises questions.
@cellulanus

Or the real reason would be that they had plenty of models of those ships. Also the real reason why both the Klingons and the Federation used plenty of ships from the movie era while the Romulans only possessed a single ship class, which was a massive ship that was comparable to both the Federation and Klingon flagships.

Why are all the ships in such close proximity have they given up on modern tactical theory and gone back to ships of the line stratagems line abreast and all that? Or is it all part of some fiendishly genius plan that I am just not getting or is to do with the CGI budget?

Budget. And the tech of the time. CGI wasn't nearly as good as it is today, nor as available. Now anybody can use Blender but back then you had server farms working for days to crank out the CGI scenes shown here, and Star Trek production wasn't the only client using that rendering machine. Other productions needed it too, plus the production for each episode was usually much shorter than what you'd see in the movie business. So you got battles that, while they were CGI, were still more simplistic than the writers probably intended to portray.

the Romulan warbirds aren't that big I had a NCC 1701-D USS ENTERPRISE and a Romulan Warbird the Enterprise was 10% longer 0 to 5% higher and the saucer section was 0 to 10% wider than the warbird
