I visit the Batu Cave Temple complex in Gombak, Selangor, Malaysia.
Vast limestone caves dating back 400 million years have been turned into a Hindu shrine dedicated to Murugan, the Hindu God of War.
The caves are accessed via a steep staircase of 200 steps and there are two main, giant, caverns, one open at the top which means it’s brightly lit. There are two smaller cave temples at the base which I didn’t have time to visit.
One of the most surprising aspects of this complex is that while it feels like it should be deep in untrodden jungle, its actually less than 15 km from Kuala Lumpur City Centre so it’s quickly and easily accessible by taxi as well as having its own metro station (Batu Caves Komuter station) on the KTM Komuter line.
