Brings a tear to my eye. It's truly amazing how music evokes such memories. I'm 49. This takes me bk to being 10 years old on a sunday afternoon in the 1980's with this music playing in the bkground.

this is a wonderful theme . I think it was introduced circa 1976 - before that the programme used a tune called Spinball composed by Paddy Kingsland for the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. It was a great surprise to hear it used in The Sweeney but the Channel 4 News theme appeared in a Clint Eastwood film ' Pale Rider' from memory

Machman and Mowersandstuff. George Layton as well as the other Ozzie crim. There is a return of them in a subsequent episode Trojan Bus. If you're fond of the incidental music used in the Sweeney at lot is also used in Colour Climax porn films of the 70s and 80s. It was the only reason I watched them. Honest! Most memorable was Sunny Laze used in the pilot programme Regan and stacks of CC films. Appropriately enough it's a horn piece. www.apmmusic.com/albums/KPMK-1131/2 See also www.mark-1.co.uk/Sweeney%20tracks.html

interesting that rugby special was a Union specific program but the slideshow has images of Offiah and Hanley playing league. As a former player who's played both codes as hooker, and a 35 year supporter of the Tigers (Balmain Tigers - Wests tigers) Hanley is an absolute legend. Always felt he could have been one of those stand out but few elite players, such as Sonny Bill, Vai'iaga 'Inga the winger' Tuigamala, etc who excelled in both codes. Hanley would have made an exceptional flanker or centre.

I like this tune, but never thought it described rugby. Always thought the squelchy synth made it more apt for a comedy kids programme - something with a fat loveable dog that was slightly stupid. Having said that, a lot of rugby players have a sort of loveable fat dog temperament (if not the figure), so maybe it's appropriate music after all.
