Went from 9 to 19 during the Seventies. A perfect decade from childhood to late adolescence. The music/ tv/ films/ societal cohesiveness ( better than now anyhow) I wouldn't swap a day of my childhood for what passes as that nowadays...and I've told my two kids as much. Oh, forgot...Raleigh Chopper and Clackers !

Big Valerie I feel like that, too, but i wonder if it's something to do with the fact that I was 9 and didn't have much to worry about anyway. My parents were going through a tough time, Dad was laid off, inflation was sky-high, miners striking, 3-day week, etc etc. In reality life probably wasn't easy at all. Simpler maybe, but not easy.

I was a child of the 70s and remember how much better things were.when simple things were appreciated.Being woken up with the sound of the milk float coming down the road with bottles clanking, condensation on the inside of the windows, Terry Wogan on the radio in the mornings, when we all sat down for breakfast to chat. Dad hidden behind the news paper muttering about the news..things were so innocent and seemingly safe. Now ruined by mobile phones, and so called "social" media. Get me a Taxi back to 1974!

Great bit of nostalgia (although hearing the theme also makes my heart sink, thinking I'm about to sent off to bed by my mum 😂) Of course Kenneth Kendal himself may have preferred modern times to the 70s, given that in 2006 he entered a civil partnership with his long term partner, an option that wouldn't have been available to him when this was broadcast.

Nice use of the CSO screen here. The two news readers are sitting in front of a blue/green screen with the newsroom keyed in. It looks like it is a live shot of the newsroom, or maybe a looped bit of tape. Love the ending where Richard Baker, Kenneth Kendall and the desk suddenly disappears from the newsroom. Not quite so smooth as we would have now, but rather good for 1974. ITN News at Ten just had a very plain backdrop.

I was born in 1986, so this is not familiar to me. It looks and sounds American. I think the BBC News was at its best in the 80s and early 90s: it started bang-on the hour; gorgeous, powerful themes from the genius George Fenton; bold, striking graphics; authoritative figures such as Michael Buerke, all gave the news a sense of class, professionalism and poise.

I grew up back then too. Sure it was not perfect, but they were still far happier more innocent times than they are now, and we wanted for less. Now there is way too much choice that everything has become somewhat stale. I do not envy kids of today at all. The tories have also decimated our nation since 2010. Poverty and homelessness at an all time high, unprecedented levels which you never saw back in the 1970’s. All we see on the news now is terrorism and bigoted attacks, and also Brexit which has split the nation. Internet social media which has made the world feel like a much smaller more hostile place. It is way too much now.
