At 17:00 I am watching a 2010s KZitem upload of a show aired in the 1990s nostalgically presenting a 1960s show where they are discussing an museum piece from the... 1920s...?

I love the word indicator at an angle behind Robin. Hermione Gingold is wonderfully eccentric and Jonathon Miller and Frank Muir smoke through the show. I'd forgotten about the object round, that seemed to get dropped later. Thanks for the upload

Alan Melville had an interesting life. During WW2 he was in the D-day landings. Asked to describe it later he said, “My dear the noise; and the people!”

Quote wrongly attributed. It was said by Ernest Thesiger about life in the WW1 trenches

Fascinating to see this again after 50 years. The tone of the show changed and became cosier during the Robert Robinson period. I'd forgotten how posh it sounded at the beginning, as if some frightfully witty, artistic, intelligent friends playing a parlour game together for their own amusement graciously allow us to eavesdrop. This style was beautifully parodied by Mitchell and Webb in thier sketch "How many Hats"'. Frank Muir as delightful as ever, but Hermione Gingold steals the show.

I remember watching this exact same episode back in 93 when BBC2 did "one day in the 60s" and 2 things strike you about how they did Call my Bluff in the 60s compared to later episodes with Robinson/Holness/Bruce 1 - the word indicator behind Robin Ray looks more hi-tech 2- The contestants have to make up bluff definitions on the spot - I think much later the panellists were given scrips well in advance

Elizabeth Allen had been in Hollywood in the 30s, but her MGM career was cut short when she sued them.

This is the only existing episode of the UK series from the 1960's. Very interesting how this originated here in the US by game show maestros Mark Goodson & Bill Todman, but it was the BBC version that caught on. The original series from the US only lasted six months.

So much so that they happened to catch the show on a London visit and made enquiries to buy the rights, only to be told, you already own it. We bought it off you.

Both captains were also comedy writers. And Robin Ray was the son of comedian Ted Ray.

Absolutely fantastic I remember BBC4 doing the 60s season one of the best seasons of BBC I've ever done. Remember that khaani episode it was in The Young cost went to visit stately home and half way through you had some 60s advert would even included the Tony Hancock egg commercial.
