As a rural GP, Dr Owen O'Flynn faces strong challenges combined with an unrivalled community of care in south west Ireland.
Dr O'Flynn is in his 4th year of GP training in the Brandon Medical Centre, a small 2.5 doctor practice in the market town of Tralee in Kerry, having spent a year in the isolated scenic coastal region of Castlegregory, a long way from hospitals and healthcare facilities.
He relishes being a generalist, not knowing what is coming in the door, or on the phone, from mental health to cardiac arrests.
For him, being a GP is a challenging and rewarding career, with a great work life balance and the opportunities to experience the range of outdoor activities in south west Kerry.
Ireland needs many more GPs especially in rural Ireland, and the Government is funding primary care in local communities more than ever.
