FWC recommends the use of bear-resistant trashcans to deter bears from visiting neighborhoods in search of easy calories from garbage. This video discusses the features and ease of use of three brands of 95 gallon rolling trashcans.
Each commercially manufactured trashcan latches automatically when the user drops the lid. This feature takes the worry out of remembering to lock the lid to prevent a bear from accessing the trash inside. All the cans discussed have passed a test with captive grizzly bears at the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center in Montana (www.grizzlydiscoveryctr.com/) . Unfortunately, large-scale distribution of bear-resistant cans is only available in Franklin, Wakulla, Okaloosa, and Santa Rosa counties, as well as within the City of Midway.
If you are interested in a bear-resistant trashcan, contact your local waste service provider to ask for one. If they do not have the cans, contact your local government officials and let them know your waste service needs are not being met. Your local government holds the contract with your waste service company and thus has the power to include language in future contracts that bear-resistant trashcans should be available to residents in your area. If you do not have commercial trash service, many large hardware stores can special-order one of the models highlighted in this video.
