I think technically we are venomous too, because we have the glands and enzymes in our saliva. I don't have anything to back that up other than hearing it before, so not asserting it as fact... But it's really not useful information. Arguably, when trying to educate the general public about venom, it makes sense to focus on the ones that are actually dangerous to us. The extra fun facts about certain animals being venomous is really for the nerds and scientists. I'd prefer there not be complacency or fear mongering associated with these facts.

A bearded dragon's venom may be virtually harmless, but their bite is still no joke. Phoenix, my beloved bearded dragon, bit me in the middle of a program. He got scared by a loud noise and was harnessed (as is protocol for the Herpetological Society I'm part of), so he couldn't go anywhere. He lunged, bit the side of my hand, and tore it open. Since I was in the middle of a program, I had to hold my hand against my shirt to hide the bleedong while I kept talking. It was over an hour before I could wash my hands and it bled for almost that entire time. Phoenix was retired from programs after that and lives happily at home without a care in the world.

I have 3 you might not know. 1)Sea snakes only drink freshwater, which they drink as rainwater which accumulates ion the surface of the ocean during rain. 2) while it is frequently stated that the long teeth of Emerald Tree Boas at for snagging birds in flight, natives in South America working with people like Bob Bledsoe and Dav Kaufman have observed that their main source of food are arboreal rats, which have thick fur and loose skin... thus, the long teeth to better hold them. 3) The best name ever for a female Blue Eyed Leucistic Ball Python is Lucille Ball Python. 😜

Fun fact with all this recent d Extinction stuff that you've mentioned on your other channel... They need to not even consider titanoboa because if they did bring it back inevitably some silly geese would try to make it a pet and get their selves eaten! Which would be really bad for the reptile hobby as a whole.

I think it's interesting how people talk about venomous vs nonvenomous animals. At the end of the day debating about whether or not varanids (or bearded dragons) are venomous is pointless because its a spectrum. Venom is literally just an advanced saliva. Saliva is designed to predigest food. Bearded dragons might have similar enzymes in their saliva to rattlesnakes but they don't rely on their saliva to dispatch prey. That's why I think it's misleading to say that they are venomous. Yes their saliva shares properties with rattlesnakes because venom is also a saliva, the distinguishing factor is whether that saliva is used to dispatch prey or just as predigestion. Komodo dragons for instance will use their salivary toxicity to aid in dispatching prey because they will often bite prey item and then follow it and continue try to subdue it. However, even though other varanids have saliva that has the same affect, they don't necessarily use it to dispatch prey (e.g. tree monitors or mangroves). Also, humans have anticoagulants in our saliva and we can cause infection due to mouth bacteria, are we venomous? Or does venom require a delivery system. I think there's a lot more nuance than people make it seem. Gila monsters are venomous but they're primarily nest raiders so what does that tell us.
@LoFiAxolotl
5 ай бұрын
lots of venoms are just straight up nerotoxins... most are... it's not advanced saliva as those animals do produce saliva... it's a toxin meant to maim, subdue or kill their prey... bacteria causing infections has nothing to do with out saliva... anything and everything is covered in bacteria... we're literally surrounded by bacteria...

My little bearded lady (rest in peace, miss that sassy girl) once bit my finger nail half off. She got her terrarium mat stuck in her mouth after I gave her a horn worm as a treat. I waited about 10 minutes to see if she could get it out but she didn’t even try. I knew I was asking for it considering she just ate, normally she would NEVER, but poor girl got stuck. She ate that nail right up too 😂 called the nurses hotline like “uh do I need a shot of something, what do I do” and the hospital thought it was so funny. We all laughed about it while I got a tetanus shot.

Hi! I have a quick question: I’ve had my beardie for exactly 3 weeks now. He let me hold him on my hand after a week of waiting maybe 3 times so far for 5-10 seconds.. then he runs away. He is small, but not tiny. He also lets my gently rub his head or “chin” with my finger. My question is should I be handling him everyday? When he runs away should I try to pick him up again or leave him alone like I have been? I don’t want him to be afraid of me. Off topic but today he ate 11 meal worms, the most he ever eaten in a day. Is that a good amount or should I push for him to eat more? He only eats when I hand feed him. Sorry for the long post. 😅

Worth mentioning with the incubation temps is that the survival of some species is being jeopardized because of global warming.
