If you want to hear what The Beatles were like and capable of in Hamburg, listen to the CD "Live at the Star Club" from April of '62. "King Size" Ted Taylor recorded The Beatles live in Hamburg on a night when Ringo was sitting in for Pete Best, 6 months before he joined the group. It's an amazing recording, though it's not great audio quality. They have an energy and sound that is years ahead of their time, and shows why they became the entertainment phenomenon of the 20th Century

That's funny because on the original vinyl recording liner notes I have claimed the show was in april of '62, and Ringo happned to be sitting in for Pete.

@Glen2k1 They didn't have the amps to do it back in the day. One of the reasons they stopped touring was because they couldn't be heard

Star Club is an amazing recording agreed. The sound quality is so so, so...just turn it up. BTW, it was recorded in December 1962, not April. The Beatles had released their first album, were beginning to make it big, but Brian had agreed that they would return to Hamburg to play at the end of december, so they lived up to their agreement, although the beatles thought they would loose the momentum they were building in England at the time. They were not thrilled to be there. The rest is history.

The live recordings from their 1964 tour in Melbourne, Australia are the best I've heard in terms of audio quality. But every Beatles show was a mass of hysterical screaming. George Martin referenced this problem in trying to get a good live recording of the band in "The Beatles Anthology." Capitol Records tried to record them under George Martin's supervision at Shea Stadium and their Hollywood Bowl shows. The constant screaming made it impossible, given the technology available at the time.

Well, Hamburg must of meant something to the Beatles, they cared enough to actually rehearse for the performance there which they weren't normally doing at that stage. Brian Epstein was so impressed with the better performance he commented how much better they were. Munich was also a great show.

But the funny thing about that was, they couldn't have cared less about being in Hamburg. Hamburg held no sentimental value for them at all. I just read that in fact in an interview from the Germany tour.

They were pretty awesome, check out the "Poker Donkey," a song by Tom Slade. It's about "Bad Beats" in the game of life! (just kidding) Does the game of "No-Limit Hold'em" ring a bell?

just making an observation, not an indictment...unfortunately, the state of the art in concert sound was primitive at best during this period. great concert sound would not evolve in a superior way until the 70's and 80's, long after The Beatles stopped touring. It was probably one of the reasons they quit touring anyway. no roadies, no monitors, no production staff, and meager sound reinforcement equipment. and yet look at what The Beatles could generate in terms of pure excitement and energy.
