Rites of passage are among the most significant rituals for any human community, but with time and so called progress, they've been discarded as irrelevant.
That's why I was so captivated by my friend Julian's story. He insisted to get initiated by his tribe's traditions, although his parents lost interest in the old ways. He and his younger brother were initiated together. He will tell the rest in his own words.
Julian Mkushi is a tour guide in Arusha Tanzania. He loves his country's nature and culture, and soon we began talking about these tribal issues that I of course find fascinating and essential for us all. Hopefully, we'll be recording more conversations. Let us know what would you like us to talk about next!
Julian is also a talented artist, and you're welcomed to visit him at his campsite over looking Arusha, with a wonderful view of sacred mount Meru. Connect on Facebook: / julian.pallangyo.9
Naturally as a woman learning about my own womanhood through African tribal wisdom, and teaching Western women about it, I am mostly interested in the girl to woman rite of passage. This conversation with Julian opens a new understanding for me about the rite of passage from boy to man, and hopefully also for you.
