He spent 8 months training, this is a professional actor that in his movie convinced us that he is really a Samurai warrior. In all the scenes of the movie he fights with the camera filming wide open and fixed so that we can see his actual skill.

I hate to rain on your parade. When this movie came out, a friend of mine said "If you want a good laugh, watch Tom Cruise's sword work in the Last Samurai". Yes I did have a good laugh. Oh, I forgot to mention . . . . in 2003 we both had over 8 'years' training with the katana and now over 25 years, but now it's just painful to watch him in that movie.

@@alexman378 Right? People think they can spot good CGI because bad CGI stands out so blatantly and old CGI is so imperfect. But almost every major movie in the last ~15 years has had some form of CGI in it. Good CGI is like any other piece of film making. It's a tool that can be used. No different than lighting and costuming. Done wrong, it stands out horribly. Done right, it just adds to the quality.

Algren is a fictitious character, played by Cruise. The movie is fiction, based on little real fact, only some historical context. Some say that Jules Brunet, a French military trainer, was the last samurai. Isn't it strange to say though, that the last true samurai was American or French, and not Japanese? Brunet played a role in the Boshin War in Japan, and later in the Republic of Ezo. Although a distinguished leader, with just claim to fame, he was a French officer, not a samurai. The true last samurai, was of course, Japanese. Takamori Saigo, was a military leader who led forces to overthrow the Tokugawa shogunate, and was also one of the three great nobles who led the Meiji Restoration. In Japanese history, he is called the Last Samurai.

@@NomadUrpagi Historically the samurai were ruthless and corrupt. They weren't as saint like as they're portrayed in the movies. They were not like Katsumoto in the movie, more akin to well educated ISIS terrorists, fanatics clinging to a warrior code. Would they be justified in waging war against their own people if things played out differently. Arguably yes, but historically no. I think if they had multiculturalism forced upon them they would have more of an argument to justify war. But Japan only benefited from modernization so no.
