The coolest dancing I have ever seen!. I’ve always loved Madness, but this to me is what I remember most fondly. Fresh on the scene, the whole 2-tone/SKA period was just golden. As a 15 year old, I remember everyone at school just turning up one day wearing green parkas with Madness, The Beat, The Specials, Selecter patches on them. Long Summer days and warm nights with mates, thinking I would be 15 for the rest of my days.
@Thorny5718

Same here mate, great days. Had patches all over my Harrington & school bag. But I was 9 year old when I first got into them in 79’. My Madness ‘M’ tattoo is looking a little weathered these days though 😂

Amazing in respect of how did they manage to get that sound, those great songs, all nicely packaged and they were so young, they could play their instruments too! I mean One Step Beyond, I don't think there's a bad song on it, masterpiece. They were a blast of sunshine back in the late 70's, during the remnants of Punk, New Wave, Disco and Heavy Metal. This has grown to be my favourite track. A part from the great melody, there's a story there, of compassion, friendship, life's ups and downs. Perfect. Sax is brilliant.

I grabbed a Selecter tape from a bargain bin. The next day I bought all the Ska tapes ..Then I scoured Record stores for all things Two Tone. I was tired of Mtv force feeding me David Lee Roth and Madonna.....Reggae fever all through the 90's . Worldbeat and Cuban...Now I revisit vintage Progressive . Ska is my favorite. My band did not cover them though...we stuck to up-beat Reggae, XTC, Paul MacArtney, Rundgren...never had strong enough Brass...

Brilliant, the urban culture change that Madness and the whole 2 Tone scene bought in cannot be underestimated. Fashion ,attitudes and influence still resonate. I remember seeing this clip on Tv. a few years later and the guy introduced it and said “ This is Madness from 1979 and Suggs has been styled by The Salvation Army”. Ha

However good the song is, it’s not strong enough to be a single. Maybe a B side. Also, look at the charts. What was that song competing against? Some UK post punk and pop bands, but mostly American overproduced singles. Like Michael Jackson or Toto.

A few years back, my girlfriend, who now lives in Haarlem - note second a - did a great Chas Smash dance for a North London friend of hers who had previously refused to believe there were Yank Madness fans. And meanwhile I was doing the appropriate "Don't watch that, watch this". Too bad they'll never make it over here except in the very unlikely event of their enshrinement in Cleveland.
