A little history part of this song: ODESSA (CITY ON THE BLACK SEA) Barry Gibb, Robin Gibb, Maurice Gibb album cut by Bee Gees, 1969 Bee Gees Barry Gibb - vocal, guitar Robin Gibb - vocal, piano, Mellotron Maurice Gibb - vocal, bass, piano, guitar, Mellotron Colin Petersen - drums Paul Buckmaster - cello (‘Odessa’) orchestra arranged by Bill Shepherd engineer: Phillip Wade, Andy Knight, E S producer: Robert Stigwood and the Bee Gees October 1968, Trident and IBC Studios, London Many of the remaining Odessa tapes are undated, but because of extensive touring the number of possible recording dates is limited. They began at IBC, with a break from October 5 to 16 for touring. ODESSA (CITY ON THE WHITE SEA) Barry Gibb, Robin Gibb, Maurice Gibb (1968) 17 October 1968 mono 6:40, lead vocal Robin Gibb, Barry Gibb Sketches for Odessa, 2009 Barry takes the lead vocal on ‘You’ll Never See My Face Again’, played with two acoustic guitars by him and Maurice. ‘Suddenly’, identified on all tape boxes as ‘How Can You Tell’, is a solo by Maurice with his first full-length lead vocal in England, with only Colin and Bill Shepherd’s orchestra. For both of these Sketches has versions with a different lead vocal, Mellotron, and no orchestra, the state as of October. Further additions in December created the finished versions. ‘With All Nations’ and ‘Odessa’ would be completely re-done in December, but these versions are on Sketches. The final versions of two important songs, along with one new one, were made on an unknown date most likely between November 24 and December 7, when they appear on a dated tape of mixes. ‘Odessa’ was a major work and it is not surprising that it took a few sessions to get a take they liked. At heart it is two long verses and choruses, but those are surrounded by other vocal and instrumental sections. The instrumental track is led by the unusual combination of a flamenco guitar by Maurice and a cello by Paul Buckmaster. The song was called ‘Odessa on the White Sea’ in this early version, and Barry identifies the ship in a spoken intro as a Dutch ship called Onstrauss and the date as February 14, 1866. This first version from October is heard on Sketches, with Maurice or Robin on Mellotron and an orchestral section that is less full than the finished take. The geography of ‘Odessa’ must not be taken too literally, although a man sailing in the Atlantic Ocean and the Baltic Sea is as far from the port of Odessa as he seems to feel in the lyrics. One possible inspiration is the Spinners’ song ‘Ellan Vannin Tragedy’, about a packet ship that sank in the Irish Sea on its way between the Isle of Man and Liverpool. What pair of ports could be closer to the Bee Gees’ hearts than their childhood home and the Beatles’ city? According to the Spinners the little ship sank on ‘the third day of the month December, the terrible storm in nineteen-nine’. The romantic date of February 14 replaced this and stayed, while the year changed to 1866 and then to 1899. They may have heard the Spinners to sing "ninety-nine" since it sounds like the correct "nineteen nine". Also done somewhere around here are the final vocals for the New York songs and the added organ part for ‘Edison’. Barry sang in a strong voice for ‘First of May’, ‘Sound of Love’, ‘Marley Purt Drive’, and ‘Give Your Best’, a bit less so on ‘Whisper Whisper’ and ‘Edison’, the latter with also some lead vocal by Robin. This song was intended to be coupled with others like "Black Diamond" on the "Odessa" LP in order to make sense. "Black Diamond" tells of a man going off to sea to make his fortune in a dangerous place hoping his wife would wait for him. She didn't. He was ship wrecked. This song out of context doesn't make as much sense. Later Robin wrote the orchestral "Titanic Requiem" that was played by the National Philharmonic but he was dying at the time and unable to attend. He was a history buff and President of The British Heritage Society for years. Barry said his passion for history was only surpassed by his passion for music and said he was a student, always learning, and a genius.

You get extra points for coverig one of their lesser known songs. The Odessa album in general is full of an eclectic mix of interesting music. I think perhaps "Sound of Love" might be my favorite from this album, but there are many tunes worth a listen. At the very least you get a sense for the versitility of the Bee Gees. It seems to be a common comment that the Bee Gees lyrics are a mess, but I think they use a lot of metaphor and poetry to get at emotions, which for me is quite effective. "And The Sun Will Shine" (written primarily by Robin when he was quite young) is one of the most poetic songs I've every heard.

There are more Bee Gees songs like these than the 'disco' versions. Bee Gees are very versatile. For example, They wrote songs for an album for Diana Ross, all R&B& Soul, there was one song she did not like. No problem. They called Kenny Rogers who called Dolly Parton and it became voted the best country song ever written, Kinda hilarious . Islands in the stream of course. A big hit of Ms Ross written by the Bee Gees was "Chain reaction'. Odessa is a fictive story about a sole survivor of a shipwreck. I;m not surprised Robin Gibb wrote the Titatic requiem with his son for the 100 th memorial day of the sinking of the Titanic. His last work, and that song you played a long time ago : don;t cry alone ' Since the war in Ukraine; everytime I hear 'Odessa' "I think of the Bee Gees . 😉🙏🏻tnx Highly, for your great reaction x

I love your videos reactions and especially the ones about songs and music :) I have noticed that you've reacted a long time ago to "007 is also gonna die" and I was wondering if you were interested to react to James Bond songs ? It seems that you are not very familiar with the 007 universe so let me explain : Each james bond films has a theme song written and played just for the movie. So I'll leave you here a list of the best 007 songs ever in released order : - Diamonds are forever (Shirley Bassey) - Live and let die (Paul MCcartney) - The man with the golden gun (Lulu) - Make it last all night (Rage - 1981) - A view to a kill (Duran duran) - The living dayligts (A-ah) - Where has everybody gone (Pretenders - 1987) - Goldeneye - Tina Turner (music video available) - Tomorrow never dies - Sheryl Crowe (music video available) - The world is not enough - Garbage (music video available) - Die another day - Madonna (the music video is a masterpiece and a must watch) - Everything or nothing (Mya - 2004) - You Know my name (Chris Donnel - 2006) - Skyfall (Adele) There you go ^^ I hope you'll start react to them soon and in this order ;) Then you could see the evolution of james bond songs throughout the years. So sorry for my bad english :)

You should know by now that Bee Gees lyrics are a nonsensical mess - especially when written by Robin! If this song means anything at all, it's about "anyperson"'s romantic-breakup-induced depression and disorientation, But ultimately the song exists to showcase Maurice's little-regarded guitar work and their special guest Paul Buckmaster on (what sounds like) double-bass.

Quite the antithesis. Robin had eccentric lyrics and some like "Mr Wallor" were just nonsense displaying his whimsy and off beat humour, but not this one. It's one of a couple of songs intended for the "Odessa" LP and meant together to tell a story. Another connected song is "Black Diamond" about a man going off to find his fortune in a dangerous place hoping his love would wait. This song says she didn't. He was ship wrecked. If you have listened to some of his songs on his last LP, "50 St Catherine's Drive" or the "Titanic Requiem" orchestral composition, they are far from nonsense and quite philosophical. He was always interested in history, especially naval history, and was President of the British Heritage Society for years.
