WTH did I just hear? This is incredible! Fantastic! The guitar with the cello, the harp. All the sections, some otherworldly, the piano later. And the vocals! Some growing out of the background, floating around, maybe in keeping with the shipwreck theme. And the details of the aftermath of the wreck of the Veronica in 1899, on Valentine's Day, no less, have at least captain surviving on an iceberg. And then it seems he is passing information back and forth with "a passing ship" about the wife he's left behind. Is this all real, and if so, why didn't that ship save him? Is he delusional? Either way, the song weaves this fascinating tale of being lost at sea and losing the one he holds dear at home in more ways than one. This song is like watching a movie, and I'm so looking forward to more from this album. And thanks to all the fans who commented here before me for all the info on this album!

This reaction was the perfect start my morning. ❤ Odessa wasn’t particularly well-received when it was released but it’s one of my personal favorites from their vast catalog of music. Can’t wait to see what you think of the rest. Cheers! 😊

Fans look at this album with very mixed emotions. On one hand this album consists of so many different genres and a lot of story telling. Genres like Pop, Classical (Sevem Seas Symphony), International Anthem, Country, Rock mixed with some Beat and even some opera. This has caused this album to be a fan favorite eventhough at the time it did not get the recognition it deserved. On the other hand it was this album that tumbled the fragile relationship between Robin and Barry. Before they even started this album they were on the edge by having different people whispering in either brothers ear that he should get the most exposure. When their manager should choose the lead single from this album he had to choose between "First Of May" sung by Barry and "Lamplight" sung by Robin. He chose "First Of May" and even put "Lamplight as B side. Robin said "I've Had It" and left the group. I will never understand why it was not a double A side or maybe 2 seperate singles instead. Barry has later in interviews said that he thinks that Lamplight was a stronger song than First Of May. So we as fans love this album but also are sad about the turmoil that followed. The brothers ended up back together 18 months later. Favorites of mine from this album are "Black Diamond, Lamplight, Sound Of Love, Marley Purt Drive and Seven Seas Symphony, but the whole album are just perfect. Also "Melody Fair" is great eventhough i take a little offence in the line "Melody Fair, remember you're only a woman" a little sexsistic maybe but that does not take anything from the song and it was great hit in asia. "Whisper, Whisper" was used in the the disney movie "Cruella" from 2021. Quite a accomplishment for a rather unknown sung like that to be used 52 years later. I think you will have a great journey diving into this album.

ICYDK there's a veiled riposte to "Melody Fair" in the Nigel Stonier song "Only A Woman"

You are definitley in for a ride on this album. The opening track sets the stage for the unexpected and this continues through the album. The first time I heard Odessa I was like, wtf. Then, of course, I had to listen again and again and the more I listened the more it became an essential for me. So unique and eclectic. The album preceded their split and it really feels to me like it's split between Robin's creations and Barry's creations (but that's just my impression). It really makes the later albums more interesting because you can better appreciate the craft that goes into the blending of two very different creative styles (again, just my impression).

Yes, there are definitely "Robin's creations and Barry's creations," but don't forget Mo...His musical fingerprints are all over the album.

@@waynett8810 Agreed! I just think Mo's talents blended more easily with both his brothers' styles; the contrast is less obvious, I think.

Awesome reaction! I was worried that some sections might be too cacophonous for you, but you absorbed it, processed it, and articulated your response wonderfully! I was thrilled to find this album with the original red velveteen cover in a used record shop some years ago. If you aren't familiar with the story, the record company had to stop manufacturing the velveteen cover because the fibers were jamming up the machinery and irritating the workers' lungs. The cover was changed to just plain red cardboard, so the original velveteen version is somewhat rare-ish.

Right on, Wayne! Cheers for that, really looking forward to the rest of this album after that opener, though it is interesting to read people's comments about the way fans have received this album over time. And crazy story about the velveteen cover edition!

@@mattsnider2667 'Odessa' didn't turn out to be the concept album that the brothers were first envisioning...You'd be hard-pressed to find a cohesive thread running through all the songs...But the collection as a whole is still quite spectacular.

your reaction was just like mine when i've listen this first time. the album is a bit confused, the band wasn't getting along at the time, and the result was the famous break up. i like it a lot. this 4 early albums is their gold period in my opinion. i got 3 on vinyl. looking foward for the other tracks reaction !

Like many Robin songs it's full of non-sequiturs (geographical and otherwise). To recycle one of my old comments - if this song means anything at all, it's about "anyperson"'s romantic-breakup-induced depression and disorientation, But ultimately the song exists to showcase Maurice's little-regarded guitar work, and their special guest Paul Buckmaster on (what sounds like) double-bass.
